I'm surely not the only person on here who enjoys a good flutter, so let's share stories of massive wins and near misses?

I'm normally a quid on an accumulator sort of guy, the main reason being because it makes watching Soccer Saturday so much more entertaining. That said, the allure of a potential big win draws me in too, sadly so often ending in heartbreak. I thought I was hard done by when the late kick off, Swindon vs Charlton, ended 4-2 to Swindon with Charlie bastard Austin running the show, costing me £170. Not much compared to a couple of weeks later when I was having an amazing saturday, all my games winning, looking set for a big £490 windfall when, all of a sudden, Danny Graham pops up with a last minute equaliser against Swansea, the bastard. One ****ty little goal costing me £490. To this day I still hold a grudge.

Had an accy set to win me £340, but then this lad called Adam Smith pops up for Bompey to score a last-gasp equaliser against Peterboro at at London Road.

Gutted.
 
Last season i backed 6 teams too win on a Saturday afternoon,6x£5 fivefolds and 1 x £5 accumulator.I had given up any hope of winning as in the 90th minute i had 3 teams winning,2 drawing,and 1 losing.Suddenly every goal that appeared on the screen on Soccer Saturday involved the teams i had backed,the 2 teams that were drawing went in front,and the team that was losing scored in the 4th and 6th minute of injury time to give me £2600.
Unluckiest bet was 4 horses in a Yankee,3 won at 40/1,8/1 and 9/2,and the other horse finished unplaced at 25/1(think the odds are correct,but it was over 20 years ago). The horse that finished unplaced came out and won his next 3 races.I won £1400 ,but would have been about 50 grand if it had won on the day i needed it to win.
Biggest win was £4500 when i had £1000 on a dog i used to own at 7/2 at Pompey dog track.
One of my most satisying bets was £200 at 4/1 on the Skates getting relegated from the Premier League in the 2009/10 season.

In 2009-2010 season i put a bet on accrington stanley to come from behind to win at leeds in fa cup - so nearly happened finished 1-1 went into ET where leeds ran riot. would have won over a grand
 
I have only ever had a bet on football once, back in 1976. My mate and I went in to the bookies to collect our winnings from the day before and found we had £2 more than we expected. So we did our normal multiple bet, then my mate suggested we looked for an outsider to put the £2 on. While scanning the race meetings one of us spotted the odds for the FA cup, Saints had just draw at home to Villa with the help of Hughie Fishers late equalizer, and the next night were going to Villa Park for the replay. Can`t remember the odds for that night, probably about 5/1 , but we noticed that Saints odds to win the cup had gone out to 150/1, so thats where £1 each way went and the rest is history.

Just to add we saw every game home and away for the cup run so it probably cost us two or three times what we won,but still my greatest bet. Still have a copy of the betting slip somewhere.
 
Tottonsaint seems like a bit of a seasoned pro then, some great stories there.

SaintMick, that's class, not only do you get to enjoy Saints winning the cup against all odds (well the odds of 150/1!) but you get a lush little windfall for it as well, not bad!

Fran, I think everybody except a select few lucky ones will wish they went the same way as you, most of the time it's definitely not worth the risk.
 
Never been much of a better, done a few accumulators here and there but no luck. Only made two proper bets on the scores, one the other week when I was lured in by paddy power's 'if barca win in normal time' bet, you know the one. Anyway so I stuck a fiver on 3-1 and bingo I was £85 better off. What I will always remember however is the watford-saints match back on a tuesday night in april 2009. I had a fiver on 2-1 to watford at 7-1 and all was going to plan unti a certain jean paul saeijs took a BEAUTY of a free kick. So good a goal and went home with such an amazing feeling that I couldn't have been happier to lose my bet!
 
Not a big better, but occasionally indulge in first goal scorer. 2005 season at St mary's against Liverpool. Me an mate had a fiver each in and he wanted a striker. I said b£&@&x to that let's puck someone who never scores.

David Prutton was 33-1. He was slipped in after about 2 minutes and missed. Then after 5 mins he was in again at the far post; now we all know Prutts didn't exactly have a killer instinct infront of goal and that moment he had a touch with me screaming "just f' in hit it". About three touches later the ball nestled in the onion bag and the ground erupted. 30 minutes later me and my mate were still being told to sit down!

The only time I have ever regretted NOT having a gamble was in the 1984 Grand National. My son, who was just a 2-year -old at the time, came into my bed first thing in the morning and said "Dad, dad, I've been dreaming about a horse". I replied, still half asleep, "What was the horse's name?" to which he replied "Dandy" as clear as you like.

I thought no more of it until Hallo Dandy won the National that very afternoon at 13-1.

My son has never come up with any more tips since, mind...
 
I once put a six pence each way on the favourite in the Grand National ( I think it was in about 1957). It didn't win so I haven't been near a bookies since.

I also bought a lottery ticket when Saints were in financial difficulties intending to help them out with some of my winnings.

I didn't win then either so that was my one and only lottery ticket.

Whats the point of gambling if you don't win? It seems to me that gambling is for mugs.

I often wonder how much my sixpence would be worth today if I had put it in the bank.

I have calculated it to be about one shilling and sixpence which means I actually lost three times more than I thought.

Let this be a lesson to all you young lads stay clear of the bookies or you could very quickly lose all of all your pocket money.

Be sensible and put your pocketmoney safely away in the bank.
 
Although not as big a gambler as i used to be a few years ago,i still have a bet most weeks on the footy, and most seasons end up a few hundred in front for the season,(although last season i lost £250 over the season).
Here are some simple rules i use when gambling on footy.

1,The less teams you back the more chance you have of winning. I will bet on 1 team up to a maximum of 6.
2,Never bet on friendlies.
3,Never bet on Scottish football.(amateurs)
4,Never bet on any game involving Wigan or Bolton.(they never do what you expect them to do)
5,Never bet on England.(the bookies always make them a shorter price than they should be,and they arent very good)
6,Never back any team at odds on away from home.
7,Never back a team at shorter than 1/2.
8,Never have the Saturday lunchtime game in an accumulator(the result is never what you expect,and your bet is down before all the other games start).
9,Never back Pompey to win.(I could never bring myself to actually want the Skates to win).
10,Never back Saints to win the first game of the season,no matter who they are playing.

Finally only bet what you can afford to lose,and always divide your winnings or losings by 10 when telling your Mrs how much you have won or lost. If you tell her you have won a grand her hand will be out,and you will be dragged around the shops on Sunday,and if you tell her you have lost a grand she will either batter you,or you will lose bedroom priviledges for a month.
 
I have a moral tale to tell you....

Back in the late 90s (99 I think), we'd been pumped by Everton at Goodison. Our very next match was against Liverpool at Anfield and I just had a hunch that the same thing was going to happen. I covered the Liverpool midfield and attack and doubled all of them with scorecasts on 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0. Lo and behold, Fowler hit the quickest ever hat-trick and my £1 on Fowler and 7-0 at 1750/1 was looking like a doozy to numb the pain of a humiliating defeat. That was until Egil Ostenstad, straight from the kick off beat 6 Liverpool players and tucked in an injury time consolation goal.....

NEVER BET AGAINST YOUR OWN TEAM!
 
season before last I used to bet on Wayne Thomas to score first .......oh the delight when it happened .....twice in a season.... a pound each time at 40-1 lovely little side bet
 
I had £5 on Chaplow to score first goal against Man Utd, odds of 14-1 so decent return. Usually I lose every bet which is why I never put a lot on.

Best win ever was over £800 on a 3 race accumulator (that someone tipped me off about)when I had just started work back in the 80s, I went out with my winnings and bought a brand new motorbike that day and rode it home. My dad thought I'd nicked it, and wouldn't believe me until I showed him the winning slip

Last game of the season at the Emirates home to Villa - a 2-1 away win with Darren Bent scoring first landed me £187 for 3 separate bets of £1 each.
How sweet to walk to the Ladbrokes in corporate :-)
