I'd be inclined to keep your money. The game is riddled with irritating bugs which haven't been patched. Borderlands on the other hand is magnificent, as are the Mass Effect games but then I have always preferred action to RPG.
Mass Effect 2 is pretty good. Don't have an Xbox so can't play Mass Effect, and no point getting Mass Effect 3 as I haven't completed 2. Saying that I guess, Joe's right in that it depends what console you play New Vegas on in relation to bugs. I was thinking of getting it on PS3 as I wasn't sure my laptop could handle New Vegas (it could handle Fallout 3 just about on medium settings, but would sometimes lag and sometimes it would be really bad) but I got a new laptop for my birthday which can play Fallout 3 on high settings with absolutely no lag (maybe even very high, I haven't tried that) so might get it on PC now. Also considering getting Fallout 2 as well. There's an XP version you can buy off Amazon really cheap, however it probably won't run on Windows 7!
The hell? I never witnessed that bug, though I remember on Fallout 3 you could send bears flying if you shot them in the face with a combat shotgun. Always made me laugh.
Well with the Combat Shotgun, you can make pretty much anything fly if you shoot them close enough range! And I'd say the combat shotgun is the best combination of power, rapidity of fire, magazine size, accuracy and ability to use effectively without V.A.T.S.. Only problem is it's relatively short range.
