Just watching a bit on Sky about American Football (yawn) talking about the draft system. I was wondering how good managers would be if it was a more even playing field with good players being shared out and not all going to the richest club. Obviously I am going to say that Adkins would well because he has succeeded at several clubs, but I wonder how the top managers would compare under those circumstances.
 
I'm probably going to annoy some people with this, but Alex Ferguson, by a long way, is the best manager in the game. Moyes is fantastic as well, and so is Adkins.
 
The real judge of a good manager is someone who can walk into a club like QPR and stop the rot and save them without spending money.

In this regard I am with JFB in that I think Moyes is probably the best and our Nigel is well up the list too.

I'm not sure about SAF but bottom of my list would be 'Arry.
 
Wenger would do well too at getting the best out of his players because think of all the average players he buys and makes them half decent, albeit not good enough to win trophies/be title contenders.
 
I have to agree with Joe, as much as I dislike Fergie's media persona, there is little doubt that he is probably the best Manager in British Football history. What he achieved at Aberdeen was remarkable (A European trophy and breaking the old firm monopoly in Scotland) and to stay at the top for a quarter of a century in England is unprecedented. He has also made young players into superstars (Giggs, Beckham, Scholes) and made very good players into greats (Cantona, Keane).
I also think that what Paul Lambert acheived at Norwich (without spending much) marks him out as a very good manager.

Well SAF came in and stopped the rot at Man Utd all those years ago, and he hasnt always had unlimited amounts of money either. He has brought so many young players through that became top players and earned/saved Man Utd a lot of money. He then kept them at the top for years by building several top teams that have consistently won trophys.
Love him or loathe him i dont see how SAF can be anything other than a top football manager.
Luckily we also have a good manager who hopefully will go on to achieve similar heights, with Saints God willing !
 
Jim magilton at Ipswich gets my vote.

I think Roberto do Matteo has had some rough luck. being sacked by west brom after getting them promoted to the premier and then their best ever start to a season and we all know what happened at Chelsea.

some managers always seem to end up in another job after a sacking e.g. Steve Bruce and what is it with Alan curbishly, out of a job for years, gets linked with most that come up but still jobless. is he too fussy?

Good point SA - it seems unbelievable now, Aberdeen beating Bayern and Real to win the ECWC, then beating Hamburg (European Champions) to win the Super Cup. Moyes has always had one hand tied behind his back at Everton, and prevailed - I see him as the next ManU manager.

I agree, I have put money on Moyes to be next united manager. He is very good, and would fit them perfectly.

The answer to this question isn't even close; Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager that has ever lived. Surprised no-one has mentioned Jose Mourinho yet! Another superb man-manager

Despite my despairing at Manure's success under him, this can not be in question. The day he retires, I will open a bottle of champers.
 
Tisdale did well at Exeter getting them up from the Conference to League 1 in two seasons. Shame they went back down last season.

Moyes and SAF are probably the best managers in the Prem at the moment.
