Legendary Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann has passed away at the age of 89.

Like legend says he finished a game with a broken neck and just carried on for the last ten minutes. Some of todays players want to come off when they get a sore elbow. RIP Bert lad you played the game for the pure joy of the sport a thing to be admired indeed
 
A German P.O.W who went on to become an English hero, R.I.P. Bert, in an age when todays goalies get injured in a warm up this man showed true courage to play in a cup final with a broken neck.

A lot of people forget about things such as the protests and boycotts by fans when he signed for City in '49 because of his heroics in the '56 Cup final. The treatment he got from the fans was much worse than that which Luis Suarez gets now.

But not really a 'done one' heading is it? Usually a dignified RIP.

Why the need to slag off goalkeepers with one big broad brush? I doubt Bert would agree or be impressed.

How is it 'slagging off'? Why would I slag off such a great man? Every passing away thread has that title. If I had put something else, someone would have said I wrongly titled it.

if i died, i'd expect you to do a similar titled thread to me, as a person of great humour, i'd expect i'd laugh up there <ok>

Bert was a great sportsman and the usual epitaph on their passing is RIP . . . .

Managers 'do one' when they are sacked or step down, I am prepared to be corrected, but I have always understood that to be the respectful convention. Bert did not 'do one', he died.

Apologies if my last point needs clarity, but the few posts should have left it obvious; some of the posters take the opportunity to use Bert's illustrious career to denigrate his fellow professionals with one big broad brush. Just like Bert, there are many fine, brave goalkeepers out there and there always has been. Like I said, I think he would have been the first to point out that gratuitous comments are disrespectful.
