Slavery still exists in abundance in Africa. 9 million apparently. Why don’t the dogooders concentrate their efforts there? Certainly don’t agree with what’s happened in the past, but ****ed if I’m going to apologise for something that happened in the 1700’s!

I think it's bang on that you state these details. I also think this is something to do with the increasing awareness that the BLM debate seems to have drawn out in some and others reading your post, albeit perhaps very few*, might have their assumptions challenged ....or reaffirmed! My very first sentence in this whole debate stated ...It's not about erasing History, it's about raising awareness which you appear to have done. On the 28th of April 1899 a 9 year old girl called Hannah Wright was killed when picking up coal from under some coal trucks at littletown colliery, she was run over when more coal trucks were sent down the incline and shunted the trucks she was under. On the 5th of October 1852 a 13 year old lad called William naggs was killed when he got caught in the engine workings also at littletown colliery Today Chris liddle and myself made memorial at littletown to commemorate the lives lost at littletown colliery and is dedicated to miners their families and the community. Are you seriously saying that Africans in power were 100% innocent In the slave trade. It still goes on today man but it doesn’t suit governments to do anything worthwhile to stop it. When we examine this whole debate we should also not ignore what some might consider uncomfortable details. Arabs from the Kingdom of Persia controlled the slave market in East Africa long before the British and Portuguese involvement. One of the key reasons in the debate circa 1833 to end slavery was economic ... the crafty Brits didn't need a costly occupation, when all they (being globally and politically dominant) had to do was manufacture external forces to destroy them instead. That was another reason for abolishing slavery at the time apart from the humanitarian cause. Mauritania fell in line with this way of thinking in 2016! The Persian together with the Brits/Belgians/Germans/French/Portuguese etc readily engaged Africans to go off and bring back local inhabitants in chains as well as African merchants and those profiting from coastal slave markets Africa currently has the largest total of people in bondage today (around 9 million, which is shocking) I could go on ... Haile Salassie came to London fleeing the Italian occupation of Ethiopia. He was still in London during the War as were his 2 black African 'servants'. I'm not sure the word slaves is appropriate here, although possibly not totally inaccurate for these people living under the conditions of 'servitude'. Great init!? And while some of those pushing an anti-racist agenda may be uncomfortable about their Emperor's lifestyle in the 1940's, it shouldn't be wielded out as a counter-argument. Sorry but they did it first, or they do it as well. or even they are doing it now in huge numbers - not only is this, at best an illogical distraction or conversely an affirmation that it was therefore OK and look at them they're still doing it in a twisted act of racist conflation. Lets end racism is logically extended to lets end all forms of work exploitation simply because the core arguments are the same (albeit some are distinct). I do trust you you can support an end to all forms of bondage through labour and we might have a chance to free many people of all manner of colours and creeds in this country too

Yes they could but I'd imagine they'd rather happily get on with their lives and shrug their shoulders at the past ... ... the people of the NE, who've lost the mines, steelworks, shipbuilding, fishing, etc have plenty of reason to whinge on about exploitation and bondage. But, in general, they'd rather enjoy their lives and make the best of what they have.
