How much would you spend on 'fixing' your 11 year old daughter's rabbit? Bear in mind that your wife is in love with the rabbit (one of a pair) and he is rather cute and a character, 6 months old and dislocated his hip.

It is one week to Christmas and I daren't share the number that has been spent so far and another operation to come in 10 days time.

Damn I should have insured it!

I spent over £80 on my youngest daughter's Guinea Pig about 30 years ago.

How hard would it be to replace it with a new, similar looking rabbit?

The real James Herriot [author and vet Alf Wight] did it with a budgerigar. A elderly client came into his surgery one day with one, because there was something minor wrong with its beak, and during a bit of a chat she mentioned that her one grievance of her companion was that it never sang. So James took the bird out of the cage to inspect it for its condition and while checking it he realised that it had died from the fright of being handled. So he made his excuses to the old lady and said he'd keep the bird in over night. She went away unknowing and happy enough, and then he handed over to his colleague and dashed out and throughout Yorkshire to try to find an exact copy of the budgie. Eventually, miles away in another town, he found one and brought it back, making sure that it was in tip-top condition. He put it in the cage and left it until the next day. So the lady came and took it home, without any vet charge at all and she was delighted. A few weeks later she came back into the surgery with a present for James, remarking... I don't know what you did Mr Herriot, but my budgie sings all the time now.

Thing was, he'd not checked on the gender. Female budgies sing when courting and rarely otherwise, but the males sing at all times.
 
My dog who's been in the family for over 15 years has been not great health-wise recently. We've had to have her put down today.

Devastated does not come even close to how I feel right now.

I'm really sorry about that man, losing a dog is horrible.
 
The first Anchorman film is on tonight on BBC three. Never seen it so might see what the fuss is all about.

I know exactly how you feel PL. We had a pet golden labrador that we got as a tiny puppy. I remember my brother brought him home in his pocket. My Dad didn't want to to know, and yet many years later we were all crying our hearts out and he was the worst of the lot. People say they'll get another to replace them. Our dog was irreplaceable. Believe me, I know and I'm really sorry to hear of it.
 
Sorry to hear about your dog PL. I haven't had a dog so I can't begin to imagine how you feel.

I normally rip the mickey out of you PL, but not today; sorry to hear your news. Attachment to pets is an unavoidable, emotional drain.

It probably doesn't help PL that much right now but when you think about all the years of happiness that pet has given to not only you but your whole family then the emotional pain of the loss at the end becomes ultimately worth it, doesn't make it any easier though.
