Indeed. Al created the pub landlord as a parody and no one was more surprised than him that people thought it was a genuine character... especially when ITV threw him a load of money for a series.

I thought it was a Sky One sitcom. When it ended he just developed the character further. I think its a great character, cleverly done.

It is clever, but it's pretty limited. Once you've seen one performance, you've seen them all.

Most stand up comedy these days is bad. I much prefer films or TV shows that make me laugh. I just don't think I get stand up comedy, the material between comedians doesn't seem particularly different or original. I've never cared much for shows like 'Live at the Apollo' etc.

Yeah, I do like Would I Lie To You, I do also (and yes I feel guilty) find 8 out of 10 cats enjoyable, especially their Countdown stuff.

Yeah, David Mitchell is amazing. Peep Show and Archer are the only two shows that make me laugh out loud regularly, but they're of a different ilk.

Well clearly what we need is a new character on Archer, voiced by David Mitchell. A supervillain perhaps.

A sidekick to Woodhouse? An evil sidekick to a evil Woodhouse clone from a failed Krieger experiment? A gator?

Al Murray plays a character though, he's actually incredibly bright. (Saying that Keith Lemon is a character as well, but I still hate the twat).

"The Pub Landlord" is a character?...well whoever knew?...:emoticon-0118-yawn: ...It maybe clever and well observed...BUT it's just not that funny, where are the jokes?. If I wanted to see a middle aged man crassly insulting other cultures I'd just watch Top Gear.
On the occasions where I have seen him on TV as himself he just tries so hard to be amusing by acting the fool, it would be better if he was more natural.

old xfm podcasts with ricky gervais, steve merchant and karl pilkington are without doubt the funniest things I have come across

That's the joke. He's satirizing those kinds of people. I often get the feeling most of his audience don't realize that and are taking it at face value, which makes it even funnier for me.

Incidentally, the Top Gear guys are playing characters too.
