This might be a stupid question, but is re-freezing defrosted food really as bad as they say? What if the food is chicken breast and it was only about 90% defrosted?

If you want to use it rather than waste it, then continue to thaw it out, cook it and then either eat it or let it go cold and then eat it with a salad, cold or have it in sandwiches. Once you have cooked it, DO NOT put imediately into a fridge, but put it aside covered and allow to cool off. Then you can put it in the fridge for later. Two days is your safe maximum after cooking.

It is not the defrosting that causes problems...it is how long it was defrosted and stood in a temperature that permitted bacterial growth. It does not become poison the minute it is defrosted. I would not refreeze meat if I defrosted it by using the microwave or by warming it. However, I would happily put the meat back in the freezer if it only lightly defrosted in the fridge and I changed my mind.

It'll be fine PL.

Edit: just saw your last post. Maybe it won't be fine.

I've just watched the football league show from the weekend...nearly spat my tea out when Portsmouth were described as "the big fish of the division" - priceless.

Indeed, I totally agree, so would I. After all, we have all arrived home from the supermarket or butcher and find that our frozen or heavily chilled pieces of meat aren't as frozen or chilled as they might be, but they still go into the freezer. and often as not, they've been frozen once before.

I see PL is talking about 90% thawed. That's pretty thawed out. Still, he's re-frozen it. I'd curry that bleeder once it finally gets chosen to be cooked. Nothing will survive that..! PL might not either..! :)

I'd have got salmonella? Eurgh I got that when I was 11, it was horrible. Of course, now I'm going to worry that the.chicken I threw out was the good one, and the unfrozen stuff is what's left. Even though I put the unfrozen stuff in a different draw so I would know.which one it.is. That won't stop me worrying though. Damm my illogical mind

I've eaten more than my fair share of questionable meat and never got ill from it. I'd have done what TSS said and just cooked the chicken and then refrigerated it.

Possibly. I'm probably just being over cautious though (my Mother's to blame for that).
