The GM crops protest at the Rothamsted Research center last year, which was covered quite a lot on the news, was just down the road from me. They didn't have a clue what they were opposing. Most of their "facts" had been totally made up.

I think the Government could do a better job at informing people about the evidence about some of these things. Of course there is always a group who don't want to listen and will just give you a load of conspiracy theories. GM crops though, it's exactly the same as normal but doesn't get eaten by aphids or anything. What's not to like about that.

I'm not opposed to stem cell beef, not sure I'd eat it myself though, pretty contradictory considering I'm perfectly happy to eat normal meat but something about I just find very... Unappetising.

It's probably because it is such a novel concept right now, in a few years people will hardly bat an eyelid.

It's the future. As far as I know the taste is identical as well, so there's no downside other than the cost, which will go down eventually. I'm guessing the people who are against it are the same sorts of people who are against other sorts of stem cell research. Opposing huge steps forward for humanity for no ****ing reason.

People being against stem cell medical research makes me really quite irritated. I have absolutely no idea why anyone would really oppose it.

I should think so, in five years or so when they've worked on it and refined it and it's widely produced then I'd perhaps be more willing to give it a try, right now the idea of a burger made of 30000 or whatever it is little strips of stem-cell grown beef (Which I've heard described as pinkish-yellow) does not have me licking my lips.

because religion is the bane of scientific progress

Nah just the stuff it's made from produces no juices with the meat. Looked like a piece of cardboard.

Ah yeah, it was sort of woven together from tiny strands of beef wasn't it. It'll be much better than that when it's in mass production.

"Playing God".

Apparently things like television and cars don't fit the description of "unnatural" though.

I take it you don't know what processed meat originally looks like then?

Well I have an idea. Like most things that are fundamentally new, it means possible changes in people's lives from the comfortable. People also often fear the unknown rather than embrace it. Then there is that old ideological caution or rejection based on theological beliefs.

Are they valid reasons..? Well, they shouldn't be an absolute barrier to research, but these people place caution in the mindset of a population, a nation, perhaps a Govt., depending upon their influence. I think I'd rather they were there as a steady. But I agree, I can't see anything wrong with stem cell research. It all seems good to me, so far.

It's a strange brand of caution those people subscribe to. In science's perennial battle against serious medical conditions, these people essentially take the side of the serious medical conditions.
