As I said earlier, it's not the power she has, but the power she denies others. Also the armed forces answer ultimately to her and not any politician. I don't think the Queen is disinterested...she's been there through multiple prime ministers and has vast experience. The thought of a politician in that position makes me shudder...I need only say Tony and Cherie Blair to make any sensible person a raving monarchist.

Disinterested = unbiased, not uninterested.

Also I don't think the army would answer to her if she acted in an undemocratic way.

Aaaand I can't see the people of this country electing Tony Blair.
 
Actually I don't think the Queen can dissolve parliament any more. I'm pretty sure that power was taken away when the coalition brought in fixed term parliaments.

It doesn't boil down to that at all. If we hypothetically elected some tyrannical President who had no respect for the democratic process, would you be saying "it's okay, he was born equal"?

Not really - of course nobody is born equal as some will have richer parents, thus likely greater opportunity, than others. That's just a fact of life/genetics/evolution/hereditary good fortune - call it what you will. It's quite interesting watching people get riled about the perceived privilege of this new royal. I personally couldn't think of much worse than a life already mapped out, devoid of individual freedom and being constantly stared at and followed around by secret service bodyguards. Okay, there may be worse things, of course, but the concept this is a privilege and not a curse is an odd one.
 
I had this email from the Times today:

This weekend, The Sunday Times will publish A Prince is Born: Royal Baby Souvenir Issue - a 16-page collectors' edition, with unrivalled commentary from the world's best and most insightful royal writers and historians. In addition, there will be exclusive and glorious photographs and a special commemorative iPad edition.

You will not be surprised to hear that I have just got back from my newsagent having cancelled this week's Sunday Times.

FFS in todays issue there were 13 pages of the rubbish with a double page cover and a souvenir pull-out supplement.

Enough is enough any more of this tripe and I might just start a revolution of my own.
 
I do have to agree with Godders that the amount of coverage and fuss is slightly ridiculous but a lot of people are interested and you can avoid it.

I watched Clueless this morning. It was brilliant. Now I need to watch Armageddon or something.
