Beckham has captained England 59 times, the fourth highest after Bobby Moore (90), Billy Wright (90) and Bryan Robson (65).

Only English man to score in 3 world cups.

Beckham was clearly a very good player, but his media presence was far greater than his ability. A Champions League quality midfielder, but not on the level of a Messi or Ronaldo, for example.
I wouldn't go by caps either to be honest, King. Phil Neville has more than Glenn Hoddle.

Beckham's earned his honours but there are quite a few players out there that haven't.
Demba Ba appeared to pick up a Europa League medal the other day and he was cup tied. Not sure how that works.
 
If we are to truly judge DB as a player we should look at who he could be compared to:

MF: Peter Beardsley-Glen Hoddle-John Barnes-Waddle-Gazza-Shackleton-Mannion-Finney etc etc
DB would not make the subs bench
Peter Beardsley a finer two footed intelligent player who since retired has worked with youth teams but not first in line at photo shoots

Glenn Hoddle could (can) do with both feet what DB could only achieve with one foot

DB a good international but no better
 
Ah David Beckham, I saw him play football once! It was against Greece, did he play any other games?
 
Say what you like about Beckham. The media circus. Self-promotion. Fashionista. His irritating wife. But for me one memory will always stand out and that was his performance against Greece. At times, if there's ever been a more painful team to watch over the past 30 years than Spurs, it's England and in that game he wore the shirt like a true lion. He was literally playing that game single handedly and carrying the team, much like Bale in some recent fixtures but in that match, our team was dire. Toothless, zero creativity and no guts. He lead by example and never quit from the first whistle to the last and he got us "that goal". Yes that goal.

Watching videos of the goal will never replicate the euphoria of that moment that free kick hit the back of the neck. It was like the entire country was lifted into ecstasy. I remember it vividly just like the time he scored the penalty that beat Argentina. He wore the shirt with pride. He knew what an honour it was to represent his country and for that I say thank you Becks. Because whatever you make of all the stuff on the side, he loved the game and played every match like it was his last. So for me, he deserves some recognition. Thank you David Beckham for understanding and recognising what a privilege it is to play for your country... I just wish some of these modern day spoilt brats knew it too.

Oh come on, he was often distinctly average and a detriment to the team, for both club and country.

The only time that I was really impressed with him was when he played his way back into the Madrid team in his final season there and helped them to the title. Other than that period he was far too inconsistent to be considered a great player.

What is perpetually overlooked about the Greece match is...
1.) Greece were leading the game twice
2.) The free kick that went in is replayed endlessly, the ones that went over aren't
3.) Germany having a freak 0-0 draw with Finland is the only reason England won the group

My comments were about his England career, not his club career.
 
I agree with the comment that lots of medals won mean a lot.I can think of many greater players in the past that won sod all during their careers,brilliant as they were.Tom Finney comes to mind.
Of course,today,in the big money circuit,players like Uncle Percy can join United to win medals with the game being secondary.But if you want to be another Audie Murphy,I suppose you can't blame him!But Audie had to work for his medals (some work!)
 
That advert for Sky Sports is f*c*ing annoying.

He's only 38. Couldn't he have achieved his lifetime ambition and joined Leyton Orient or somefink? Anything to avoid him concentrating all his efforts on self publicity.

Would have thought that ad would be in line with one of those "fantasies" you've been speaking of. Or is that the problem, it's not sexual enough?

What isn't overlooked was that he carried the team that day. Only one on the pitch that put a real stint in, whereas everyone else was pathetic (other than Teddy when he came on). Was a magnificent one man performance.
 
I fell sorry for Beckham.Imagine having to stay home with that horrible other half he's married to!
