TWF I'd also like to add that his family have had an association or have been supporters of the Tigers from at least the 1950s that I'm aware of. Specifically, through his father (who was also a professional footballer who had trials but who wasn't signed by City). Nick's dad and my late dad were friends. You're entitled to your view on Barmby as a manager, but you are so wide of the mark in every other sense. As OLM suggests, I wonder if you were following the club when Nick signed?

Well you're wrong really aren't you.

Firstly, Barmby was an extremely high-profile signing for League One side, especially when he was only 30 at the time. He was a class apart at first, in a different league to the rest of our squad, which Ryan France never was. He also had some remarkable games and scored some great goals, Wednesday away being a prime example of both. In our promotion season your great pal tango man said himself sometimes he'd let Barmby do half-time team talks and said he was like a second manager for the club as he was such a strong leader. In addition to his off the pitch credentials anyone remember those 3 games that got us promoted, often referred to as the 'play-offs'? Barmby gave us the lead away at Watford which put us in good stead to go and win the first leg and the tie. Then in the home tie when Henderson scored, a lot of City fans feared the worst. Luckily, Barmbs was again on hand to equalise showing great desire to grab that goal. So Barmby was probably the most influential figure throughout those 2 games in getting us to Wembley. When we got there, who played the pass to Fraizer in the build up to the goal, again, it was Nicky. Even for the next 3/4 seasons when Barmby came on he was a class apart and if he was in the squad now he'd be our best finisher.

There was only his first season where he was a regular member of the first team anyway. After that he averaged about 20-25 games a season, and half of them were off the bench.

You're stretching it a bit there. The play off goal at the kc. It was on the bloody like when he nodded it in and as for wembley, it was a gash pass! Had it been a decent pass, fc would have been 1 on 1, albeit we all k or what happens in the end!

Everyone has their own views on players which is the beauty of the game but to suggest that he was an amazing player who we were privileged to see gran out pitch due to his love for his home team is absolute bollocks. He came because we were the only team who wanted him and we were prepare to pay a decent salary to him. I've no doubt the fact that it was his home club played a part in him signing but it certainly was but the primary or even secondary reason.

On a separate note, nick and Geoff haven't spoken for decades so not really sure what relevance his dad has!

He was pretty critical in those games for the play-offs, very well said. The Wednesday game was a corker too, great memories. Don't understand hatred for him really.

I'd agree with you on Ashbee and Windass, but I don't think Barmby is in the same league as them. As I said, if he wasn't from Hull I doubt we'd even be having this debate.

Not to mention a passion for the game, coupled with a love for the club and a lust to win that fed and inspired many a cameo turnaround. Trivialising his playing contribution only demeans the value of an opinion.

Barmby's performance against Wednesday was the best individual performance I've ever seen from a Hull City player.

Mind you, I only started going in the 70's.
 
Oh, TWF likes Coldplay. Wish someone had told me earlier, I wouldn't have bothered arguing my point.

He didn't have too bad a game there on new Year's Day 2007 either. Each to their own I know but I don't see how some people can devalue the contribution he made for the club during his time here. Though as said comments seem to be from people who appear to dislike the bloke it's probably understandable that opinions get in the way of facts.

Pretty sensational I agree. We were lucky a player of his class came to help us up the leagues. Nicky was a very intelligent player too, was more to his game than met the eye a lot of the time.
