Barker has done one...

Such a fall from grace. As tickles points out, could be Pompey V Ferriby next season. Hopefully Ferriby hold there nerve and keep pushing to regain the top spot.

Portsmouth is a prime example of how major disagreements between club and stadium owners can lead to a downward spiral.

Coventry are another example.

Do you think there's a lesson to be learned ?

And that was precisely my point in a discussion a few months backs when I asked at what point Ferriby become a rival? People said it could never happen but look what has happened to Pompey, what did happen to Bratfud and what happened in Verona.

We should use Ferriby to send our top kids to until our reserves can play decent clubs.

It would also help Ferriby keep there wage bill down. Win Win for all parties.

I was speaking Rob Price, the Physio, who stayed at my hotel and I asked him his opinion on it as the Ferriby result came up in conversation (obviously not the best person to ask, like). He said that their manager doesn't see any of our youth players that he thinks could improve his side. He rightly pointed out that just because we're higher in the football league pyramid, doesn't mean that our younger players are going to force our way into their first team. He also mentioned that it's better to wait for clubs to approach us about our players rather than offering them out. Although the opposition in the reserve league isn't any good, the games are often attended by scouts from all sorts of clubs. So there you go.

What happened in Verona? Was it in connection with Verona which merged with Hellas to form Hellas Verona , went back to being Verona and reverted back to Hellas Verona? Or Chievo, the other team from Verona?
One thing is indisputable, for a place to spend a weekend away watching football Verona would win hands down in a competition with Hull.

I dont even know if you're joking or not but assuming you're not...

Nope - Hellas Verona has always been Hellas Verona. There was no merger.

Chievo - the local village team who were incredibly similar to how Ferriby is to Hull - suddenley went on an amazing sequence of promotions to eventually overtake Hellas - Serie A champions in the 80s no less - as they reached Serie A and Hellas were relegated.

This is how Chievo got their nickname The Flying Donkey as locals said "The day Chievo overtake Hellas, donkeys will fly".

Over the coming years Chievo went on to enjoy European football as Hellas slipped to the 4th tier.

As a result, thousands of locals grew up supporting Chievo rather than Hellas.

My point in the discussion was, why couldnt this happen here and therfore when do they become our rivals than our plucky 2nd favourite team? I was largely mocked, again assured it will never happen

There was more than one merger. "From 1898 to 1926 Italian football was organised into regional groups. In this period Hellas was one of the founding teams of the early league and often among its top final contenders. In 1911, the city helped Hellas replace the early, gritty football fields with a proper venue. This allowed the team to take part in its first regional tournament, which until 1926, was the qualifying stage for the national title.
In 1919, following a return to activity after a four-year suspension of all football competition in Italy during World War I the team merged with city rival Verona and changed its name to Hellas Verona. Between 1926 and 1929 the elite "Campionato Nazionale" assimilated the top sides from the various regional groups and Hellas Verona joined the privileged teams, yet struggled to remain competitive.
Serie A, as it is structured today, began in 1929, when the Campionato Nazionale turned into a professional league. Still an amateur team, Hellas merged with two city rivals, Bentegodi and Scaligera, to form AC Verona. Hoping to build a first class contender for future years the new team debuted in Serie B in 1929. It would take the gialloblu 28 years to finally achieve their goal. After first being promoted to Serie A for one season in 1957–58, in 1959 the team merged with another city rival (called Hellas) and commemorated its beginnings by changing its name to Hellas Verona AC."

At first I wondered if it was to do with some drama involving two gentlemen.
