Aren't home-schooled kids subject to some sort of regular assessment by authorities. You'd imagine these sort of shortcomings would be picked up that way, no?

Yeah they get visits and things.

There are a large number of children being deregistered due to Covid and their parents not wanting to send them to school. I doubt the country has enough resources within the authorities to visit them all as much as they’d like.

That's right. My nephew does see such a person.
The downside of this is the parent/parents don't have to agree to it. To my mind that's a worry.

I think it should be compulsory, but it isn't.

Anyway, this chap comes around our house maybe twice a year and gives him a kind of exam to see where he's at.

Each time he's been, he's been really impressed with his development, saying he's well above average for his age.

Home Ed won't work for everyone. It takes a committed family effort to make sure the child is learning.

Not just academically, but in the ways of life itself.

I do wonder why some parents don't allow such assessments though.

Something lockdown did for our kids was give them the opportunity to learn other skills. Loads of cooking/baking, loads of DIY, loads of gardening, different types of ICT skills, even life skills like tying their shoelaces, making cups of tea etc.

Differentiated learning is obviously the way to go in classrooms and has been for some time. Especially now its more and more common to have classes that cross 2 year groups. I taught a class that was a mixture of year 5 and year 6 kids and its piss easy to teach them the same thing but to different levels. Modern teachers dont even have to think about it.

The idea of having all the smart kids in one class is stupid for a number of reasons i cant be arsed to go into.

I dislike streaming by ability.

Sticking all the less able kids in one room gives them nobody to bounce off, nobody to help with ideas, nobody to be a good example of how to tackle a particular piece of work, etc.

Like Bart Simpson once said “We’re going to catch up by going slower than they are?”

Dutch clearly never went to Cooper. It was mainly kids, but then a few you’d probably be less sure of.

And he taught them Chemistry. It was after he’d been made redundant and retrained when Capper Pass closed.

I think Waggy played for Capper Pass after he retired from the "big" leagues. I worked there in '66. Dirty bloody plant - no health and safety laws in those days.
