What I don't get about Australia is why there's no mention of anything between the arrival of the Aborigines 60,000 years ago and the Europeans a couple of hundred years ago.

People from what is present day Indonesia (Sulawesi certainly) traded for centuries with the Aborigines.

Never understood the attraction, Indonesia is a beautiful country with a magnificent ancient culture, why go further. Of course the Aborigines made the sea crossing from Papua tens of thousands of years before any European would achieve anything remotely similar. An incredible achievement.

Mate, you have to remember this is Australian History.

There was nothing here until they turned up 200 odd years ago except "savages" and barren land. Then the English and Mr Cook created the best country on the planet through slavery and other wonderfull things like alcohol and depravation etc. The End!

For get that the dutch had been heer 400 years ago & that Cookieboy was actually using 600 yr old maps from the Portuguese..that dont matter, they werent English ! also the fact that Cook was actually only on a trip to Tahiti to see a solar eclipse. When he got there he opened a sealed envelope from King George (I think) with orders to progress further and claim Australia. If it wasnt for that eclipse we may all be savages and never have been saved by the English.....None of that matters Imaz..this is Aussie History.

Of course there had been trade links open well before that, but dont let that spoil the story !!

What about Aussie Rules Football? There's no excuse for that let alone the Camp 1970's Gay Club kit the poor players have to wear.

Then there's Shane Warne and his hairpiece. Words fail me!

This may come as a shock mate, but Aussie rules was actually invented by a group of English & Australian Cricketers as a way to keep fit during the off season.- true
hence the game being played on a cricket pitch, involving a lot of long catches with a smaller ball...
As for the kit, you are aware that Australia has the highest population of gays per percentage of the population, than anywhere else in the world ?

Don't believe that Gay percentage stuff tbh. Same world over whether it be Australia or Saudi Arabia, denial and persecution levels may change but percentage remains the same: 4% circa. Makes that one in our 25 man squad, who?

Quite an interesting subject so I looked it up. Wiki, and more importantly the website of the Victorian Football League back Queens up. What I didn't realise is that Aussie Rules was codified way before Association Football or rugby. Before then there were so many different types of footy that teams would have to agree which version they were going to play before games.

Just looked myself, interesting history indeed.

Looks like football evolves on its own irrespective of outside influences which surprised me: ...football was played in Australia dating back to the period before European colonization.

I suppose it's down to dependence on oral rather than written history - you could say the same of large swathes of Africa and the Americas. Compounded in Australia by the totally alien (to Europeans) way the aborigines see the world. Songlines by Bruce Chatwin gives a good insight into it. The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes a great, and definitely anti English/ pro convict account of the colonization.

Lads, how in the name of God could a game of football have evolved from CRICKET! <laugh>

A bunch of public school nonces fannying about in their rinse-white pullovers evolving into a tough rugby-like game of footie? Sometimes one should not take official British history as being 100% reliable.

EDIT: I've just looked it up and it appears I might have jumped the gun. I'm still not convinced of the actual influence of cricket on developing a game of football but it looks like a number of English, Irish and other codes all influenced the creation of Australian Rules Football. (Interesting that someone would believe something he heard during childhood without verifying it first. Perhaps we're all sold silly stories in our formative years that suit the communal or National theme? My bad. Now I'm going to check if Baseball was really invented also by the Irish after all!<doh> )

The origins of Australian football before 1858 are still the subject of much debate, as there were a multitude of football games in Britain, Ireland and Australia whose rules influenced the early football games played in Melbourne. Teams would have to agree before each match which rules would be followed, and different aspects of association football, Gaelic football, rugby football,[1] Sheffield rules, Cambridge rules[2] , Winchester College football, Harrow football[3] and the Australian indigenous game of Marngrook were used in those early games.[4] Tom Wills himself was a boarder at Rugby school in England, and participated in different types of football during their formative years.[5]

Just say when and where. It'd be nice to find somewhere that plays it with the sound on, rather than just a tv in the corner.

I'll check with my 'local' in the city as I have a bit of cred there and the chef is a spuds fan. I'll promise a few hoops will turn up as long as the sound is on. Should work. Will ask tomorrow....

Yup it's the Turf Bar on Queen Street. Just checked and they will play it WITH SOUND!!!! If the venue is packed, they'll give us the Bookie Room (room for 20 or so) with the 50" Plasma. If it's quietish (and it should be according to the Manager) - it'll be on the biggest of screens with sound too!

Have forewarned him and he's cool with it - there'll be a couple of my spud mates there for some banter!
