It's been announced that QUEVEGA will visit top French sire NETWORK this year. Her first foal is a yearling filly by BEAT HOLLOW and she was covered by YEATS last year. NETWORK is best known as the sire of Sprinter Sacre and due to libido problems will cover a select book of 50 mares in 2016.
I always counted Network as being German Princess - German born and bred and owned. Does he stand in France and is therefore considered a French sire?
Yes, he's always stood at stud in France (retired to stud in 2002) so is considered part of their industry, despite his own bloodlines.
Only the landed gentry have "von" in their name Cyc. The real big nobs have "von und zu". No chance of me getting anywhere near that nonsense
First foal by KINGMAN has been reported. A filly out of maiden winner Exceptionelle, from a good German family, was born a few days ago at John Deer's Oakgrove Stud.
Oddy, I married into "fame." My wife's family had convicts on each of the first three fleets. The older generation find an uneasiness in it, my wife doesn't care either way, but I'm as envious as all hell.
More first foals on the ground reported for BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE, OLYMPIC GLORY and SLADE POWER. The first Frankel of the year has also been reported at the National Stud, a colt out of G3 winner (and fellow Warren Place inmate) CHIGUN.
Another one reported today, the first foal for Eclipse winner MUKHADRAM: a filly out of winning Green Desert mare GREEN POPPY.
Apologies for the stupid question just a fortnight into 2016... A friend of mine is in a syndicate that owns an unraced two year old filly. I think there are about a dozen people who own a piece of her but she is not yet named (no idea why). He tells me that she is expected to be ready for the racecourse by late March or early April; and that she has been entered for the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. As she has not got a name yet, would I be right in thinking that it is possible to enter a horse for an early-closing 2016 race simply using the horse’s pedigree? I know they can do so for very early-closing races like The Derby because yearlings are unlikely to have been named as many of them will still be in the ownership of the studs that bred them. Surely they would expect a horse to have a name by the time it was two if it was being trained to race.
I was looking at the entries for the big spring bumper at Newbury in March http://www.racingpost.com/horses2/c...=2016-03-05&big_race=Y&raceTabs=#raceTabs=lc_ Not only are many of the entries not named, they don't even have a trainer listed.
Without looking into the specific entry details for the race I can't comment off the top of my head. My general thought would be that most early closing races for two year olds would not require a name for the horse. There is usually a deadline specified that says the horse must be named by a certain date. Naming doesn't usually take long, a few weeks at most unless permissions need to be sought. The main delay is because the passport has to be sent to Weatherbys to be amended and then sent back to the trainer. At certain times of year it can take longer due to the volume of name requests that need to be processed.
Several bits of bloodstock news to report: First foals on the ground for Sea the Moon and Charm Spirit. The Fugue has delivered her first foal - a filly by Dubawi who will be retained Champion US sire GULCH has died in retirement at the age of 32.
