He wasn't exactly a failure though was he Princess? If you look at the RPRs of his progeny it is better than average I'd have thought. Although Sinndar, Shogun Lodge and Grandera were his biggest money spinners (nearly £5m between them) the brilliant, unbeaten, Queen's Logic was unfortunate to have her career cut short. Not sure but might well have been ante post fav for the 1,000 Gns, having won the Cheveley Park Stakes by 7l. Unfortunately Grand Lodge died at the age of 12

He was a bit of a handful I gather

I think I read somewhere that on his final race, after passing the finishing post, he chucked his jockey off.
Saw that. He does crack in these 2yo winners (that's why he's the 2nd leading sire of 2yos in Europe). Let's hope he gets a Group winner and even a classic winner to give him a well deserved boost. I would imagine that with yearlings being sold for up to 210,000 Euros his stud fee will increase again.

I know he stood 4 years in Europe. So 3 in Italy. The story goes that when Dick Hollingsworth sent his mare Kyak to Italy to be covered they didn't see her for 4 months and most of the time had no clue where she was. The result was Ripeck who is a fantastic mare to see in the bottom half of a pedigree. A great shame he didn't spend more time in Europe.
He never went back to Europe after the 5 year lease to Darby Dan as no insurance company would provide cover due his temperament.

We could easily have a whole thread devoted to Ribot. For eg his Timeform rating was based on him winning his second Arc by 6l rather than the 8.5l that photographic evidence showed. And Sea Bird's Timeform rating was based on the officially recorded 6l whereas photographic evidence showed it as 4.5l. And what a legacy. His European progeny included Molvedo and Prince Royal, both winners of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe; Ragusa, winner of the Irish Derby, St. Leger, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and Eclipse Stakes. In America he sired Long Look (won the Epsom Oaks), the full brothers Ribocco and Ribero, both winners of the Irish Derby and St. Leger; Boucher, the winner of the 1972 St Leger; Tom Rolfe, winner of the 1965 Preakness Stakes; Arts and Letters, winner of the 1969 Belmont Stakes; and Graustark. Ribot's son His Majesty sired the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Pleasant Colony, and his great grandson Alleged, by Tom Rolfe's son Hoist The Flag, emulated him by winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in succssive years (1977 and 1978). I just loved that horse. Little **** though he was.
But it's an interesting picture because Ribot found a 'nick' with Hyperion, Libra by Hyperion produced those two classic winning brothers but many others when sent to Ribot. Ripeck produced a very good animal in Buoy (by son of Hyperion). Long Look's dam had two crosses of Hyperion close up in her pedigree. Morston was by a son of Ribot out of a grand-daughter of Hyperion. Ribofilio's dam was a grand-daughter of Hyperion.

Just a minute, Ron, if you have a look at the video rerun of Sea Bird's Arc win in 1965, he hung very badly left in the last furlong or so in the run to the line, finishing nearer the stands rail than the far one. Therefore, had he kept straight it would have been well over a 6L. victory? There's not much in it between Ribot and Sea Bird II, IMHO. He won our Derby with his head in chest, more-or-less hard-held by jockey Pat Glennon. Sea Bird II was a great racehorse, who certainly ran Ribot close, at the very least. He was, sadly, badly treated by connections on retirement to stud, and died in relative equine poverty.
I should add that on this particular Arc day the weather in Paris was just awful, if my memory serves me correct, and Sea Bird II, the classic mover he was, did not appreciate the conditions at all. This caused him to hang left, as mentioned above, but did not stop him slaughtering the best Arc field ever assembled, an impressive Who's Who of Classic and Group 1 winners. Ribot was a truly great racehorse too, but a right son-of-a-bitch! The main off-track difference between Ribot and Sea Bird II was that it was the latter's owners who were the s.o.b.'s..................
