Treating myself and getting an Oklahoma joe highland tomorrow. I’m upgrading from my £35 Asda water smoker.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07QZ47Y41/?tag=not606-21

Anyone got experience and tips?
Really excited for my first smoke.

I have been wanting to get a bbq smoker for a long time.

A bloke a know has one of these and some photos he puts on social media are absolutely amazing.

When I'm not on the bones of my arse I'll get one until then I'll just look at other people's slow cooked meat, oooohhh errrrggghhhh Mrs!

Honestly look out for the water smokers in Asda, bbq season is round the corner, for £35 it’s perfect as a starter smoker. I’ve probably used mine about 15 times last year. Fantastic for the price. Hope they get them in again like!

I’m into simple bbq
I have a cheap decent one I use when the family is around and cook the ordinary things chicken sausage burgers etc
I have a small compact one I use for the two of us and sometimes expand to fish roast Vegas etc
I have not really thought about smokies etc
Really the weather is so unpredictable you just have to have a bbq when you can
It’s difficult to arrange a get together
However over the last few years we have been lucky with the weather and been able to arrange a few
Overall I think I would not invest in expensive bbq for the time it would be used
Nevertheless if I did live in a suitable climate I would eat out side most of the time and use the bbq most of the time
I do spend all my time outside in good weather

Last year I was cooking brisket and ribs. Turned out unreal.

I’m just excited to get a bigger cooking surface. But I’m a bit unsure of the best way to cook the meat…

Love BBQ-ing. Have used Gas in the past, but back to charcoals now. I'm torn what to do next. I love the convenience of gas, but the smell and taste of cooking on coals in unrivalled.

Summer and Autumn I cook outside most nights - particular favourite is doing a whole roast chicken using the indirect heating method, or doing a load of marinated thighs/drumsticks with corn and salad

Anyone add to the Charcoal v Gas argument?

I love BBQ and smoky flavours on it. I do a lot during the summer months, even when the weather isnt great. All about low and slow and the rub you use, along with getting good wood, apple is what I use and have a ready supply nearby. There is a superb book of recipes and how to tips called Grill Stock - worth an investment. There is a recipe for chicken with whiskey glaze which is unreal and a pulled lamb shoulder which is like nothing I have ever tasted - done in 6 hours as well, which makes for a great afternoon / evening.

Never tried gas mate. I just use lumpwood charcoal and have always loved the smell and taste. I have never understood how gas could do the same thing?

You don't get as much of that smokey/chargrilled taste, but it's still a great way to cook. The key advantage of gas is the convenience - heat it up, chuck a couple of steaks on, then off it goes. A lot more cost-effective that using a whole bag of briquettes fore 2 pieces of meat (for example). I guess a smoker box may help....

Playing with fire is all part of it for me, not to mention the taste. Charcoal.
