That is why I said in my opinion. So you comment was superfluous.Because they sold quite a few records doesn't make them great. A lot of bands who you wouldn't give the time of day to sold more.
Scott Joplin was indeed overrated, every tune sounded the same.
I don't base who I like on records sold. I base it on how much I like the music.
Bengals was the one who said they were a one-hit wonder, and proof to the contrary was given. Simple.
Also Bengals, I do hope you don't judge bands on how many number ones they've had. That's a slippery slope.

I never said they were one hit wonders. I said they were, IN MY OPINION, overrated. Being around at the time they were never that popular compared to other acts over here. Only one person in my circle liked them. Plenty of soul fans, Hendrix, Cream, Who, Small Faces etc...Strangely enough the one lad who was keen on them was the biggest Beach Boys fan you could ever meet.

The Beach Boys are perfectly fine. Not fantastic, but not ****e either.
Maybe they are, but that doesn't mean I should like them more than The Doors.
This argument is pointless. I'm leaving it at that.
Nobody is saying you should. But you dismissed them as not fantastic but not ****e. The evidence indicates that more people disagree with you than agree.
You get a bit too serious about music and it's meaning and relevance to everything. Surprised you haven't inserted zeitgeist into it.
Music is to enjoy not analyse. Of all my favourites Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Lovin' Spoonful, only Van Morrison can be considered mainstream, popular or big sellers in comparison to other artists. Others like Mahalia Jackson. Jimmy Reed, various blues artists and the early Temptations had some success but most of them didn't in this country.
No politics ta. I made an oblique reference to something once and was locked out of the thread by a moderator who isn't judge and jury apparently.
Having said that, given the lack of Mexicans in Scotland, it has been successful for the best part of 2,000 years.

That is indeed nice. Where do you live, only get the usual humdrum stuff in my garden?
On a serious note why doesn't quill create his own music thread? Let's maybe call it " quills music thread " then when people click on the "something completely different" thread they might just get that? Something different! Just a thought. 
I live in a semi-rural bit of Oxfordshire, we see and hear this fellow quite often (I assume it's the same one each time) as well as muntjac, rabbits, deer, and we are plagued by moles!
