I was caned on a couple of occasions at Driffield Secondary.Agony at the time but a sure-fire way to curb any disruptive behaviour.

When I moved up here you were hit on the hands with a "Tawse",a long, thick piece of thick leather with a slit in the end(tails) that struck your hands(maximum 6 hits)...It was agony if the right teacher hit you with it(it sort of sizzled when it struck you and the pain was like nothing on earth). You did your utmost to stay away from those particular teachers but you'd still play up in other classes as some of the teachers were **** at it,although sometimes they'd send you to be belted by someone who knew how to use it

I think, from memory, it started to phase out in the early to mid 80's and in my opinion the Teachers, even the strict disciplinarians, then began to lose control.

It probably sounds like the most barbaric of acts but it was necessary and you didn't get it if you behaved yourself...I never got belted(or caned)for nothing,I deserved it, and it could be the ultimate deterrent in the correct hands.

In my opinion and I speak from experience,Corporal Punishment should have been left in place in Schools.

    Have to disagree.
I had plenty of cane at school, both primary and secondary and it hurts. Half the time they didn't even know if they'd got the right culprits, they just wanted to show who was in charge. Just made me have no respect for them whatsoever. I learnt what was, more or less, right and wrong from my parents and they never hit any of us kids.

Problem now is a lot of parents don't bother to try and teach their kids anything, just leave it to the school teachers who don't have the time or tools to do it.

I don't have a problem with someone/anyone disagreeing with my opinion. You obviously have a different view and I have no reason to disbelieve your own personal experiences with Teachers.

As I said in my post,I deserved it every time it was administered to me personally.

That's true but I don't think it justifies whacking kids. Violence begets violence etc, etc.

This was the advice given when hiking in Oregon a few years back.

    Openly encouraging scrapping with animals.
