"You have to look at yourself and have confidence in yourself".
Dick Advocaat wants to keep his focus firmly on his own side as he gets his coaching career in the Barclays Premier League under way.
The 67-year-old takes his Black Cats to West Ham’s Boleyn Ground on Saturday to kick off a nine-game stint after signing a contract until the end of the season.
The Hammers have endured a difficult run of recent form but are still inside the division’s top 10 by four points.
Sam Allardyce’s side will be looking to get back on track, but they will face a Sunderland side looking to pull away from the relegation zone under their new boss.
And Advocaat’s pre-match approach is a simple one – to infuse confidence in the side and focus on their own game.
“There is no need to say so much – it is important what we do,” he said.
“We know West Ham are a strong side, very physical. They have done well so far except the last period, but before that they had an excellent run.
“They are a difficult side to play but every game is difficult. There is no need for us to always look up – you have to look at yourself and have confidence in yourself.
“That is the most important thing.”
