"The site will be down this weekend for service sometime during the early hours. It is planned to do a reinstall of absolutely everything after the recent problems."

Any idea what the problems were Oddy? Was it anything to do with registering with Cloud or something completely different?

Something to do with @ apparently - I truly am no expert. Like if I write @Ron - no idea what it does but apparently something with it wasn't working properly

Nothing happens unless you click on it; then this happens

Hope it's not Mick fiddling with the code.

I know it is annoying but it has been very stable until recently. As oddy mentioned, some users were abusing the tagging @ system. Mick (site owner) tried to prevent it but the change made the system unstable

Site will be down at midnight tonight for 4-5 hours for a complete reinstall.

Hopefully normal service will be resumed tomorrow and we can look forward to an uninterrupted Festival

Steady the pram smokey -have you looked at other forums - I doubt you find one that is anywhere like this oasis - patience is a virtue

Your right there, even aside from the excellent tipping on here it's the people that make it. I'm just getting a bit frustrated that every time I go to look at the forum it's down and then when it does come back on it takes about 10 minutes for it to think about accepting anything I post

its all relative= if all we have to worry /complain about is an internet forum having some technical issues ............we are lucky

Quite right, Rudebwoy, it's nothing to get the innards into an uproar about. Site has been very good for a long time. Like the old boy manager of the Vauxhall car dealer in Gt.Yarmouth used to tell me years ago, when I yet again took the bloody company car ("Viva"?) in for repairs, "probably just a bit of grit, nothing to worry about".

Was it anything to do with registering with Cloud or something completely different?

The concept of ‘the cloud’ is a form of data storage that allows users to store their data but access it from multiple devices because the data is on some massive server in the middle of a desert somewhere. This is the latest idea that the IT industry has for fleecing users because eventually when you have your whole life on their equipment, they can start charging you to access it.

The Cloud” is an ISP (owned by Sky) that is freely available in a number of public places in Britain (e.g. Wetherspoon pubs, Marks & Spencer stores) but the problem was not with them as I was on someone else’s Wi-Fi at the time.

A trace route analysis showed that the point of failure was getting from CloudScape (in Manchester or Paris) to the Not606 host. CloudScape is an IBM database management client/server network system.

The page full of text error messages referring to MySQL are coming from a database server – MySQL being a free source database product that obviously underpins the site in some way, such as login credentials or storing posts.

Hopefully those in control of the refresh will follow a standard procedure – go offline, start with a full back-up so you can always get back to the start, make whatever changes are deemed necessary, test that the changes actually provide the required functionality with no side effects (otherwise revert to back-up), go online.

I would hope that the data is separated from the code and that it would be a simple case of reverting to the code pre the attempted changes. However I can't see how that would take 4-5 hours. Therefore I must confess I'm a little worried. Fingers crossed

The reinstall appears to have been successful, everything working OK and pages loading quickly. Fingers crossed ......................

That's good! Take my hat off to you guys, honestly, you really know your onions! Guys like me are fair operators of a keyboard, but, nowadays, that's where it ends. Am from the Murray Code era!

To give it's full title, the Baudot-Murray Code. Here from Crypto Museum (I should have applied as an assistant to the curator years ago). :emoticon-0100-smile
