Would like to keep Ramsey - although I do think he's over-rated. Never really produced the goods on a consistent enough basis.

Compare it to:
Pogba 6 goals and 10 assists in 27 games
De Bruyne 8 goals and 16 assists in 37 games

What box to box player produce more in the premier league? Not many I think.

I think he's a good player and it would have been interesting to see what he does under a new manager. He certainly has quality but didn't always perform, that could be more down to him being under Wenger and the system not suiting him. Maybe he will thrive under another manager, it can happen.

Yeah he had a good run. But that's kinda the problem with Ramsey - he hits a red hot streak then disappears for 2-3 months.

For me Ramsey is a typical British attacking midfielder. He is a copy of Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Wilkins, Gascoigne and so on from the past. All these players are not really good enough at anything, scoring, creating, defending, to be a specialist, and not good enough in total to make a good all-rounder. There are also a lot of players in the country that are nearly as good as them. His assists are not the same as Ozil's, they are not laying goals on in the same way.

I think we should cash in on him, I think he is vastly over-rated, very replaceable, and good value to sell. Same with Wilshere.

Now, if we move Ramsey and Wilshere back wide as an attacking midfielders... that is a different matter.

Ramsey is a perfect indication of how far our standards have fallen.

Outside of that 13/14 season, he’s been very average. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a premier league quality player, but I feel at any other top club he would be a squad player. Yet here we are praying he signs a contract extension. He’s not a world beater and I’ve never been his biggest fan. He pails in comparison to some of our past midfielders.

I always thought he played best when he was playing "Out of position" on the wing. He ended up as a sort of Parlor/Lundberg mix that I thought worked quite well, and his eye for goal in the final third is put to best use.

As a box to box midfielder he just doesn't do anything quite well enough, he isn't quite good enough defensively, not quite good enough running with the ball, not quite good enough passing, accuracy or range, not especially fast, not good in the air, and if he does play there he isn't in the best place to take advantage of his ability in the opposition box.

Ramsey (and Wilshere) both typify our problem in midfield. We either have to go with Bear's plan of three very strong defensive midfielders to make up for the lightweights up front, or we go with 4 or (preferably) 5 midfielders who all play decent(ish) defence. Ramsey does not fit in the system with the 3 defensive midfielders.

Now, in either system these days, the plan is to have 2 full backs who are better going forward than defending as well, providing width, so it isn't all about defence, but that just makes the team even lighter in defence if you are short of midfielders who can defend. We don't have Dixon/Winterburn full backs anymore.

You spent ages arguing the likes of Mustafi are actually TOP class and we are all just mistaken.

But when it comes to some of the GREATEST non Arsenal players in Premierleague history like Scholes and Gerrard your arguing these guys were actually just "Not good enough at anything?"

England tried to compose a midfield with 2 or 3 of these guys on a regular basis and it always failed miserably, because they were always lacking in specific areas. If you put skills into 3 categories, Defence, Creating, and Scoring a modern midfielder need to excel at two of these and be pretty good at the third.

If you have a 4 man midfield you can perhaps have one player who is more of a specialist, particularly in scoring or creating, but it is still a less than optimal situation.

Our midfielders are just not good enough in enough areas. But Gerrard, Scholes and so on would not be playing today. Scholes was a total liability in defence. He just couldn't defend well enough to make it onto the pitch for a team today, unless he played as a second striker and I don't think he would have done well enough to justify that position.

I think Wenger failed to react to the modern realities of football. We as fans shouldn't fall into the same trap.

I wouldn't call Zidane a complete midfielder TBH - he was very offensive. One of greatest for sure but I would call Vieira or Gerrard a complete midfielder. They can tackle defend, create, carry the ball and score goals.

I think if you type 'complete midfielder' into Google Stevie G will be one of the first players who come up.

going to have to disagree with you there.

Zidane was not a complete midfielder, he was one of the best attacking midfielders but he didn't have to defend (well not as much) and he was so magical he could do ozils role but with much end product and when it counted.

Scholes was a complete midfielder and him and keane ruled the roost. even in europe they weren't too bad considering they would go up against 5 man midfields as a 2

Lampard was a brilliant goalscorer,scored loads and whilst i'm not exactly enamoured by his short range through balls, he still bagged plenty of long range and set piece assists.

Gerrard was a complete midfielder and could do it all. The only thing he lacked was a brain and teamwork (hence stevie me).

anyway enough of that, this is about ramsay and i have to agree, he doesn't do enough to be a top midfielder, good enough for a club fighting for top 4 at most but if you want to improve he needs to be a squad player, not a key player.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Yaya Toure. He is the definition of a complete midfielder. Barca used him as a central defender to DM and City used him as a CM and AM. He's played in a lot of different roles and bossed it.

he's shocking DM nowadays (well box to box). He hasnt got the legs. Still powerful with a pass but you're better using him a a luxury player if you do get him than him having to cover a half DM half since you plan on playing a high line

I have thought about it, but I just think he’s a bit too old at this point. If he was 32 or 33 I would say go get him.
