Aye I'm aware of this and it's interesting in the way it highlights the complexities of the powerful in Saudi Arabia, but it's a system where individuals in power not necessarily government can act to suit their own ideology, much like Bin Laden himself. The Saudi government wouldn't have supported it though which is why I said earlier it's more nuanced.
The main reason Al-Qaeda turned on the U.S. is because the Saudi government/royals snubbed Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in favour of the U.S. to fight against Iraq when they invaded Kuwait.

Two exceptional documentaries on 9/11 over the past week.
Turning Point: 9/11 & the war on terror on Netflix, and Osama Bin Laden: the road to 9/11 on Channel 4. Best documentaries I've seen this year.
Both tell the build up to 9/11, the day itself and the aftermath. What makes them compelling is the Netflix one has the Americans talking about the actions of the Americans, and the Channel 4 one has the Afghans talking about the actions of the Afghans and Al-qaeeda. Nobody trying to talk for the other or imposing their bullshit. Just raw.
