First year BEng will give you all you need to know that heat impacts yield. Changes the point of plastic deformation. Also it wont have been steel rod used, but I and U beams for stiffness mixed with elasticity within the design to allow for flex in wind/weather and reduce structural resonance.

Anyone look into the fatigue these beams will have seen?
