Aren't there 2 side to this coin though? We all keep coming out with this statement quite glibly - but how many clubs have gone into admin since 1992? (I know that many on this site will have the answer to that). The difference is that some clubs are bankrolled by a benefactor. Dave Whelan admitted that he had put £100m of his own money into Wigan FC, Steve Landsdowne has been underwriting Bristol City FC to the tune of £11m per anum. Blackpool gambled on getting to the Prem by paying wages and bonuses to the tune of 134% of turnover (a gamble that paid off luckily for them). How much did Leicester City invest in players last season? The average Championship Club spent 88% of their turnover on wages in the season 2009-10. We can't ignore the fact that many clubs are spending monies they don't have, and are therefore are "cheating". So on that basis it's okay to cheat if you have a generous benefactor? That does not make a level playing field at all. The points deduction make very little sense as this is not a punishment for financial mismanagement (mostly the owners being long gone). I'm just wondering where the unfair advantage is - we are in league 1, as a result of the manager/s and players not winning enough games. Saints ended up in league 1 for what? Taking a risk and building a new stadium?
StainsAlive , am I getting under your skin? I suggest you read my reply regarding old Le Big Nose was he not telling the truth in his autobiography to promote his book? You really are a prick( and probably an armchair supporter)!
You do know that is not me Minging, I would never call you a twat, a **** maybe, but never a twat!...
And what happened to you in the Prem is an indication of what can happen if you're not careful. As Steve Claridge said on the Football League Show, you were in the PL for years, and zero investment was put into infrastructure. They just kept spunking it on players and huge wages. "Everyone's doing it, so its ok." The points deduction is the FL's condition for allowing a club with a history of abominable financial management into their league. Unfair advantage? How about Liam Lawrence, Norris, Kitson, Varney? All signed on huge wages that the vast majority in the Championship can't afford.
And there was me thinking that this was you SA, maybe the constant sunshine in the Ukraine has pickled my brain?!
Actually on reflection I have just noticed that the other poster has the same name but in lower case, so SaintsAlive I unreservedly apologize to you and its middle finger to saintsalive! You might want to have a word with ted as its a bit confusing
My point was that even though there was a distortion in some of the wages paid to players, both as a result of not being able to offload Prem players (with no relegation clauses in their contracts) and the Lampitt/Cotterell Quality over Quantity policy - there was no distortion on the playing field (where it surely matters most) as we didn't get higher than mid-table and the 10 points relegated us.
Without those players, you would have been more likely to be relegated, in that the first half of your season would have been much like the second.
I was fully expecting a relegation battle and the deduction was not a great surprise. Quite frankly, -10 points is the least of our problems. We've been a basket case for so long it's remarkable we have survived this far. It is still touch and go whether we will have a club to start the season and I cannot say I have any confidence that we will. That said, I have bought my season ticket. I'm not sure what that makes me - take your pick from devoted, deluded or demented?
Well how about sanctions against the Directors who ran the club into the ground, after all they passed the fit and proper persons test. Or how about making the fit and proper persons test actually fit foe purpose. Deducting the club points after the guilty people have done a runner solves nothing and hurts the fans. Now you can have a laugh, but its not actually a laughing matter for Pompey fans.
Are you kidding? We got the appeal decision on the 09 August and Wise had to scrimp a team together after the transfer embargo was lifted. We had a real mental attitude that year though, probably never see a recovery from a points deduction to almost promotion ever again.
As I said to the other guy, punishing the directors is all well and good, but what about the team that has potentially gained an unfair advantage by spending beyond their means? As an aside, I have every sympathy for the fans. Certainly on here, the vast majority are good guys and don't really deserve whats happening. But as a business, the way PFC has been operated by a succession of owners is sickening. Any other business, and it would be long gone. Even in football though, you eventually have to pay the piper.
Why thank you Pie king its nice to know I am appreciated after all I have done for Queen and Country. Now I am back, I will of course keep reminding you Scummers what two faced , selective memoried, low life's you really are.
Low life SB, I think anybody reading your comments would associate that with you. Brush up on your insults as well as your twisted humour.
How about a punishment for the club and a stiffer punishment for the owner? These guys always have loads of money being pushed around the Cayman Islands. Dock the club points then, if you must, but above all, ban these vultures from ever presiding over a football club again and hit them for wonga if at all possible.
It really is about time the people who put the Football Clubs in these positions get there nuts cut off, to put it politely .
