No, but it's a canny quiz question to see who was the first.

Sorry couldn't help but go looking in Google for the answer <doh>. But Xhaka did get a mention!

The first Sunderland player to score a goal at a FIFA World Cup finals was Cameroonian striker Patrick M'Boma

The Historic Goal

While on loan at Sunderland from Parma, M'Boma achieved this milestone on 1st June, 2002 during the group stage of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. He scored for Cameroon in their 1–1 draw against the Republic of Ireland.

Key Details of Sunderland's World Cup Scorers

  • Patrick M'Boma (2002): Scored the opening goal in the 39th minute against Ireland in Niigata, Japan, making him the first active "Black Cat" to ever find the net at the tournament.

  • Asamoah Gyan (2010): While Gyan is widely celebrated for his iconic World Cup goals for Ghana (including his famous extra-time winner against the USA in 2010), he actually scored those before officially signing for Sunderland later that summer

  • Granit Xhaka (2026): The club had to wait 24 years for its next active World Cup goalscorer. Current Sunderland midfielder and Swiss captain Granit Xhaka scored a penalty for Switzerland in their 4–1 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Yeah, I Googled it as well. Would never have guessed it was Mboma

Looked like a soft red card/penalty for Qatar to me, barely touched him.

I liked the VAR expert consultant saying the pen and yellow was 100% correct and when it got changed to a free kick and red that was apparently also actually 100% correct.

just watching the canada highlights

Not sure on the red card in the first half

i hope Kone is ok, ( that didnt look good going by the players reactions too it)

is this starting to warm up and be a good WC?

its the reaction of the Qatar player that did the challenge,

you can see how shaken he was,

it was good to see Kone sitting up and waving,
Yeah for sure.

Just reading is a double fracture but seems they pretty confident he no ok from it.

Big loss for them he has been so good a real driving force player for them.

Hopefully the wait for the next one will be a lot less than 24 years. I'm hoping more like 24 hours.

Diarra or Brobbey maybe. Talbi?
Talbi could be a good shout against Scotland. Maybe Isador if Haiti can exploit Brazils back line if Brazil are as poor against them as they were against Morocco.

Mind you if it'll end up being Alderete for Paraguay against Turkey with none of us watching it!
