Still, a great result against what has been a bogey team who, after all, had have reached international semi-finals and a final. They are rated 11th in the world, four places below Brazil, two below Germany and above the likes of Belgium, Uruguay and Italy.
Tuchel’s not making the mistake of picking just the biggest names but a team with a style in mind. The omission of Trent Alexander-Arnold is a case in point - a player with great skill in search of position to play. Full back? Wing-back? Central midfield? He’s been tried in all of them.
I saw a graphic somewhere of where England’s attacking threat came from under previous a manager or managers, I can’t remember which. Previously 80% (ish) of England’s attacking threat was coming down the right. Under Tuchel, it’s split much more evenly - 55/45 ish. A big difference……
