I think prestige and overall image of the club and stadium are critical for long-term success in the top flight - look at Brighton and Brentford since building their stadiums, they've never looked back

Also if you want to grow the fanbase you need to make sure there are ample tickets available for casual fans who are unlikely to bother with building up their loyalty points, sitting on season ticket waiting lists, etc, etc

They just want to be able to easily jump online, buy a ticket, and enjoy a one-off game with low / minimal effort

So it's multi-dimensional and not just about raw gate receipts or number of bums on seats

It's complicated, some clubs have what is now prime location for development enabling them to raise funds to build new out of town stadiums, for others the costs of leaving a 20,000 stadium and going off and spending many millions to build a 40,000 capacity place just don't add up even more so if there is a danger of relegation once or even twice.

Here’s what AI says on the matter…

The exact promotion deadlines in the Hull City sale agreement (Allam family to Acun Ilıcalı, completed January 2022) were tiered as follows:

  • £30 million extra if promoted in the 2021–22 season
  • £20 million extra if promoted in the 2022–23 season
  • £10 million extra if promoted in the 2023–24 season

Promotion in any season after 2023–24 (including Hull City’s actual promotion in May 2026 for the 2026–27 Premier League season) triggers no additional payment.

These terms come from the most detailed contemporary reporting on the deal. No later updates or reports have indicated any extension of the clause.

That's great news, I wouldn't have been happy seeing Ehab getting anything from this promotion. Hope that's true.

Talking as a Hull based Brentford fan I don't think the stadium needs an increased capacity but it currently only has about 600 hospitality seats which is probably something the commercial team will want to increase.

For comparison, Brentford had about 150 at Griffin Park and now there a 2800 in a 17,250 seat stadium. These aren’t hospitality box seats (Gtech only has 3 boxes) but "Pie & Pint" type packages in separate lounges.

If anything you could backfill behind the West Stand to create these extra facilities without the complexities of dealing with increased spectators.
I thought Acun had commented on increasing the hospitality capacity somewhere in the East stand?

Forgot to add (and relevant to the op ed) I'm interested to hear people's opinions about where an integrated training ground and academy could be located.
Best bit of flat land is Beverley rd / Low field Rd Anlaby , it never floods especially now the area has the env flood relief it butts up to the Priory Tigers site at Syd Smith which is huge for youngsters . ( Cit missed a trick there )

Brentford's capacity is only 17,250. I accept capacity isnt everything.

Somewhere around Ferriby, Melton, or Brough would seem the most practical.
Where all the available sites are either Amazon/Heron mega-warehouses or housing sites. That's the problem, you'd be going a long way out to find large sites that are plausible, and they would have issues with access and utilities.

There's a large site next to Melton Business Park, it's too close to Ferriby for them to get planning on it, but they'll have no problem getting permission for pitches on it and the building can go at the front immediately opposite the Business Park.
