Régis Le Bris is preparing a transfer window that's already very structured at Sunderland: regular meetings with scouts, targets identified by league, and coordinated work with Florent Ghisolfi for months.

Unlike last summer, the club has anticipated: priority to targeted profiles, low volume but recruits with high impact, with the ability to adapt based on departures… and a potential European qualification.

RLB confirmed the first paragraph of that last week in his press conference.

This is really well put

There’s a real risk when signing players or coaches from extremely well-run clubs — such as Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth — and yes, that includes Andoni Iraola.

Not because there aren’t successes, but because these environments are so well-structured that they elevate individuals to a level that isn’t always transferable. That makes evaluation difficult.

We’ve seen it before. The jump into a completely different environment — with higher expectations, more pressure and less structural support — isn’t always smooth.

It’s similar to signing attackers from the Bundesliga. The system and league can inflate output, which means you have to be absolutely certain you’re buying the player — not the context.

For every Haaland, there’s been a Werner, Sancho, Havertz, Nkunku.

Top quality exists — but so does context-driven performance.

Which is why you have to be extremely certain.

I often thought similar when I saw Graham Potter after leaving Brighton. If RLB had come in under the Short regime I very much doubt he'd have had much success.

I think we've mentioned before that this will be a very interesting summer. I'm expecting us to move a dozen or so players out who aren't involved in the first team squad or out on loan. I'm expecting the loan for Geertruida not to be renewed and Cirkin and Luke to go. I'm expecting big bids to come in for a few of our players.....Ballard,Le Fee,Rigg,....and several players wanting game time...eg,Wilson,Mayenda...of which they may not get any guarantee, will be on the market. A fit Traore should get another year,I would think.
Incoming, always pending any first choice players being tempted away, and our first team squad remaining largely as is,I'm hoping for PL ready centre-back,left-back and striker.

I pretty much agree with all of that mate, although if we sign Fatawu from Leicester, I wouldn't expect us to give Traore another year, as we have Angulo and Ta Bi as well as Riggy, who can play there.

Also, Xhaka being out injured, highlighted the need for someone to come in as cover for him too.

We can always put out a decent 11 but it's the bench (finishes) I want to see improved, game changing players.
For me this is always the difficult next step as players here already or potential signings will not yet see us as an elite club especially with Europe now unlikely (which I don't mind).
I think we will be ruthless again with Mayenda and such who just aren't getting minutes unfortunately.
I'm getting an electric reclining sofa soon so I'll sit back and watch it all unfold !!!!!!

Think Traore will be good if we can get him fit…. it was only a 1 year deal when we signed him…. but I liked him… would like to keep him. You’re right about centre mid if Xhaka’s out, but we would need someone with PL experience to stand in…. so, another big money signing in that position do you think?

Id be offering Traore that extra year regardless, long as hes fit, lot of young lads & his experience is critical even if he ends up not being regular starter.

Do we look at a Rigg & Mayenda loan, potential to one of the promoted teams then they get experience at this level or high end championship if we think that would benefit more than a relegation battle

I'm not sure we'd need premier league experience in xhakas understudy tbh, so many of our lads have now proven that it's not the be all and end all.

It's a massively important position in any team. The most difficult part will be convincing whoever it is that he won't be coming to be a bit part player. Maybe someone who can play in Xhaka's or Sadiki's role, so we can rotate between the 3, with Diarra, Rigg and Le Fee sharing the more advanced midfield spot.

Traore did impress after a slow start, but hasn't played since December. If we do get Fatawu, then I really don't think we'll go for him again, as we have back up for Fatawu on the right, in the shape of Ta Bi and Rigg. Same goes for the left side - Angulo, Talbi and Mundle should be enough, assuming Mundle stays.

We do need a second holding player though. One that can play with or instead of Xhaka. I think we needed that Friday.
Interesting point about playing with two holding players sometimes. Can seem really negative but there's the hindsight thing, where you realise afterwards that the extra stability was the way to go. Tricky to work out the right time to do it.

Zubimendi doesn’t quite seem to be top 4 quality. He has been getting a lot of stick from pundits and the Arsenal supporters since new year. He would be great here.

Not sure he’d be willing to spend half his time on the bench for a season or so, that would be the problem getting in a player good enough to take over from Xhaka.

Behave man.

He cost them like £70million.

We could and should have a look at Gabri Veiga at Porto he’s quality annd easier for us to pick up from Portuguese league.

He can play 8 or 10 and is superb on the ball.
