Some canny views from the Roker Report lads. Has Diarra got a song? Could do with singing it loud on Friday like we did with Le Fee after the panenka attempt.

(I didn't copy and paste this one as I don't agree with it!)

Ciaran McKenna says…

In football, mistakes are constant.

Some are more consequential than others, but they’re part of both the game itself and a player’s progression, and Diarra just needs to move past it and get onto the next game. He’s been a brilliant addition to the squad with his pace, power and talent — and one error can’t cancel out all the good he has done for the Lads this season.

In the moment, Diarra showed real resilience.

To be able to make that gut-busting run, that late on and during an end-to-end game just shows how much he’s willing to give, and he also showed great confidence to take it on by himself. Yes, in hindsight, he could’ve picked a corner or even rolled it to his right for Chemsdine Talbi to tap it in, but ultimately it wasn’t a bad effort and he forced a brilliant save.

I also appreciated the maturity it took to apologise to the team afterwards, although I’m sure that the other players will have had the same reaction as I and many others have had.

The error was compounded by the fact that they went straight down the other end and scored the winner, but we didn’t lose this game because of his one missed opportunity. There were other mistakes made by other players, which will be addressed the same as his. Forget it, move on and make up for it.

In times like this, we need to support him. Diarra is a brilliant footballer who’ll have many more brilliant moments in red and white, as long as we allow him to.

Malc Dugdale says…

I’d have to argue against my mate Gair here, despite the fact his birthday is on the way (happy birthday in advance, bud — let’s hope it’s a great one).

That wasn’t “horrendous” for me — it was just football, and way more experienced players have done the same and worse. Maybe we’ve gotten so used to ‘Til The End’ going in our favour that when it doesn’t come off, we’re even more gutted.

That’s a compliment to the squad, that they’ve taken our expectations to such a level that this was taken like a kick in the family jewels, especially after we’d done so well to come back from two down.

With perspective, this was a great chance made by a lung-busting run way into injury time. Diarra made the run and put a shot on target, and it was saved by the Villa goalkeeper when nine times out of ten, a deft little lift over the stopper like that would’ve meant a fourth goal.

Even the best make mistakes, though. A matter of weeks ago, we were all rueing the panenka that Enzo Le Fée fluffed, but did that make him any less of a talented young Sunderland footballer? Of course it didn’t. Le Fée has learned and grown from that, and that’s exactly what Diarra will do, and I expect him to do.

Chin up, lad.

You gave it your best shot, and it didn’t come off. You’ve said your bit to the lads and that’s big of you. You’ll be all the better for the mistakes you make and grow from.

The inside story on what Granit Xhaka did to change the game for Sunderland at Villa

The extent to which the Black Cats turned the game on its head was still remarkable though, with skipper Granit Xhaka having led the fightback with some inspired speech-making.

“At 3-1, Granit had a talk in the middle of the pitch,” revealed Sadiki. “He told me, if we score once, there is hope to win the game. We scored once, then all of a sudden you are equal to them. It's 3-3, and then you have a last chance. You don't score it, then they punish you again.

“We were this close to getting a blowout, but we were also this close as well to winning the game. That’s the mixed feeling we have after the game, I think.

“It could have been 5-1 as well, but in the end we came so close. I think we showed mentality, we showed that we can do it, it's small margins.

“They punished our mistakes and that's why they’re a big team, that's why they’re in the top four right now. They have the players for it. We have as well, but we need to work on it. That’s the whole point for us.”

I’m not even convinced it should be classed as an error. It was a a perfectly valid attempt at goal against a top keeper. Decision in an instant, didn’t have time to re-think and pass or another alternative. Keeper could have saved another type of shot. Well done to the team and Diarra for creating the chance, unlucky with the outcome and great keeping - he was always going to make sure he got there after Isodor’s.

Exactly. It was a very good shot but the keeper unfortunately made an equally good save.

Right I don't think it was an error either. He didn't catch it as well as he would have wanted but I agree that I wouldn't class it as an 'error'

I think most of the "error" shouts came out as heat of the moment stuff, especially as they scored the winner straight afterwards. Once people calmed down they accepted what it was. If that is 6 inches higher it's 4-3 to us. It's disappointing that he didn't quite get it high enough but definitely not a serious mistake.

Not to be too pedantic but we didn’t concede until halfway through the second half and it was pretty even throughout with Liverpool just about shading the cha chances mainly due to Wirtz having a good game and their cb's had one of the only matches ive seen them not have a complete **** up at the back!
Aye it was the Fulham game when Granit got into a bit I’m sure. In fact may have been West Ham away.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Listened to Ha'way the podcast today reviewing the game with Phil Smith and it was mentioned that if Villa didn't score straight away, the Diarra miss would've been viewed the same as Wilson last minute against Liverpool away and what might've been but since they went straight down the other end and scored it made it into a sucker punch

Exactly. It was a very good shot but the keeper unfortunately made an equally good save.
If it goes in we are all ****ing over the audacity of it.

As has been said if we give Diarra a rousing reception Friday and he does an Enzo post Brentford, could be massive for the run in.

6 weeks or so ago I was concerned about Diarra but now I just see a lad who’s going g to be massive for us next season.

He’s making smarter runs, he’s looking for and getting on ball more and he is very forward focused with the ball.

We need that and we have it in him.

I’m still getting flashbacks to ‘we could have been 6th’ but I don’t hold a bit of anger towards Habib. It’s football and as again has been said, this is Emi Martinez. He makes massive saves. He saved Argentina the World Cup in the last minute of extra time.

Nothing bigger than that.

I don't normally get carried away and make outlandish predictions, but I think we might get 6th anyway. Need to get past Forest which will be massively tricky and then one game at a time always. #Thetimetobeexitediscloseathand.

We've been saying we need someone to get alongside the Beast.....and Habib is doing it. He's taken time to adapt to the PL, along with a number of others.....it's a difficult league physically.....but he's there, and it bodes well for next season.

Yep,good post mate.

For anyone mentioning the word europe, im letting my heart rule my head. You only need to look at Forest in a relegation battle now and Palace being a shadow of the team they were last season with the amount of games involed. Spurs aswell for that matter... Good things come to those that wait and right now i think our main focus is to keep on being a top 10 Prem team, try win a domestic trophy and keep the europa league at bay for another year or 2, 3 or 4 years.

Just my opinion though.
Yeah I totally get that Tees. But I think we have a much better setup behind the scenes than forest do or did. I personally see it as another “we’re not good enough to stay up” after last season’s promotion. As we weren’t then.

Be interesting to see it though. It’d be worth it just to get drawn at the san siro and suddenly watch all the “have you ever seen a Mackem in Milan?” Comments swiftly deleted!!

:emoticon-0102-bigsm That's a wonderful dream marra.

Let's hope Diarra kicks on from his miss.. goals/chances in this league are precious .

About their goals, there are defensive points to pick up on... eg their pass out of defence to the wings was not blocked...the player on the wing was not blocked/prevented from crossing and of course the CBs should have marked better or been first to the ball.

Actually defence wise we have been great this season, we are allowed a lapse.
