This Patterson thing...
I reckon he just had a load of thermals underneath because he knew he'd be standing around so much.

Don’t agree re Wilson. He has to direct goalwards and away from the keeper and the fact it’s on the volley from that distance with the ball curving away from goal it’s not an easy chance. Keeper was moving across his goal.Isidor. Centre of the goal, pace is already on the ball so just need to make contact, no defenders, goalkeeper rooted.
Then i'd go Watson, I think Isidor changes the direction of the ball slightly when it goes through his legs, and then Mayenda the most difficult because it's a header while being challenged from behind. The defender has a hold of him and drags him to the ground.
I would like our forwards to be scoring all 3 though.
Not taking into account wind, bounce on a slippy pitch then? I reckon you’re going against what majority of fans think because of your job. Fair enough, massive disagreement from me as it’s nowhere near as easy as you’re making out. Seemingly he doesn’t hpjust need to make contact, as he did, and he didn’t score.Isidor. I personally think our press has been good and a lot of people are mistaking high press with the pace / intensity of itI'm on watching the game now, just goes to show how ludicrous things are live with the emotion, I saw many criticise Patto but I think sometimes you've just gotta accept things happen, you can't parry them all wide, especially from that close.
I wonder mind, if the query about our press fading recently has something to do with having to play the same midfield every game.
I also think we are still pressing very well, but mainly in the first half of home games.I personally think our press has been good and a lot of people are mistaking high press with the pace / intensity of it
Add them things to the other 2 aswell then and it makes them even more difficult. Surely if you are talking about wind the one with the cross being highest in the air would be the most effected, which was Mayendas. And the slippy pitch would effect Watsons the most as it was along the deck and the cross took a nick 3 yards infront of him?Not taking into account wind, bounce on a slippy pitch then? Agree we should score all three mind!
8 attacking third recoveries yesterday, press was goodI personally think our press has been good and a lot of people are mistaking high press with the pace / intensity of it
Indeed. Yet you seem to be the only one I have found who thinks that.Add them things to the other 2 aswell then and it makes them even more difficult. No, I'm not just saying it because of my job. That would be stupid. It's just what I believe.
I think, the way the stat works, xg is not based on what you miss or score, it’s on how many chances are created. So you can lose 7-0 and gave an xg of 3 where the oppo has an xg of 0.6! Just all of theirs are worldies from 45 yards and all of your missed chances are 1v1s or open goals. Sure @SourPatch2 can correct me, but that is crudely how I see itSo without poking the hornet's nest is our xg lower because we never seem to score "easier" type goals.
I'm an accountant so like numbers but even this sometimes baffles meI think, the way the stat works, xg is not based on what you miss or score, it’s on how many chances are created. I think that quote is 2 or 3 years old from Pep? Might be wrong. You see, I just don't believe that's true to any great degree ...
... good footballing people are 90% intuition and 10% data driven imo.
I bet Shankly, Ferguson and Clough couldn't even spell statisticks
Pep Guardiola:
"Statistics are just a pattern of information that we have.
There are players who make the team play good without the statistics. If you perform to your maximum, if you perform to your best and you helped your team-mates and make the process better, it is enough."

You are right about Clough etc, but they didnt have access to data science. Might be a surprise to some but Allardyce was a leading proponent of it in this country.
Over the last 2 seasons I have slowly been less useful as a coach to elite academies. I gave my last coaching session months ago now. Mix of younger lads needing space to showcase, but also some of how I coaches not being valued so much. I was quite intuitive with players. I valued my eyes and intuition when seeing a player and how to improve them. It became a lot more formulaic. Now I do think data is important, but I dont understand it. My days are past in terms of helping players. World moves on. I do beleive though, that coaches of bygone eras, born now, would be even better with some of this data. Paisley is my idea of the best british coach, I think he would be clever enough to value it. Clough, doubtful, he was a stubborn bugger, and arguably he wouldnt have been effective today. Had the great pleasure of spending time in his company too, so hard to criticise, but he woule have ploughed his own furrow.
If a club over relies on it, they can get rid of coaches. If a club ignores it, they are failing to help coaches and players. Brave new world, I am probably happy to have had my time when I could watch players without data in front of me. But again, I am an old fart and the game is progressing beyond me.Yes I know Allardyce employed all kinds of analysts, psychologists, dieticians, etc, even ballet teachers to help with movement.
I'm all for stats, data and analysis but feel those involved and employed, in that area, will naturally overestimate and defend them.
We're not dealing with components that can be adjusted, machined and tinkered with. These players are human being training and performing with other players and staff. If a player's stats were the most important aspect you'd wonder why many players can bomb at one club but star at another.

Well said, unfortunately in my opinion the biggest negative of the premier league,if that pleasure and feeling of joy when your team scores is taken away from you, well what’s the pointI'd have to disagree mate, the game is being analysed to death ...
... in the PL supporters barely celebrate some goals until a man, hundreds of miles away, applies computer technology.
It may be more accurate but it's slowly choking the sheer joy out of the game.
Football was always a wonderful escape from reality for the working man ... not sure how true that is now.
VaR is the single worst thing to happen to our game in my lifetime.I'd have to disagree mate, the game is being analysed to death ...
