I don't hate him but I'm happy to castigate him tbh, he threw himself to the wolves imo.

I understand his reasons but I don't agree with them and don't like the way he lectured people on LGBT, etc, then chose to take a wage from a country where executing those people is part of their law.

I wouldn't want him back here at all, we have a bunch of players many of whom could easily leave for more money but seem to value ambition, teamwork and loyalty above cash ...

... Henderson did exactly the opposite and I wouldn't want that kind of influence here.

Yep mate....that's what I meant about what/who he was suposed to be representing.

However, in my eyes some fans would also shun Pickford, if he played for the mags...

I suppose the best way of explainigs this is this -

Smug - let's say that you are Henderson. ...and you turn up to watch the lads on a Saturday...and you mates, and other fans spot you..

and the slag you offf....and it hurts you so much....how are you supposed to register that mate\?

I can see what you're saying mate but, sorry, it's a case of 'you reap what you sow'.

If I jump ship and start supporting Newcastle that's my choice that hurts no one. But I'd imagine quite a few Sunderland lads would let me know what they think and some might do it face to face on the trains or wherever.

That might hurt me but I've brought it on myself and would have to register it. Henderson used his position to lecture others about being tolerant to homosexuals in football. He then takes a salary from people who would execute them, a country blatantly using people like Henderson to fool people into thinking they're better than they are.

He took the money, now he can take the flack ...

... it's only words, not like people are going to stone him to death.

But does that make him better or worse than those who did nothing to support LGBTQ+ community and then went to Saudi for the money? If Newcastle weren’t state owned I do think there would be less animosity towards Henderson.

I don't allow what one entity is doing to affect how I view another. My feelings about Henderson would be the same without the situation at Newcastle. I don't like hypocrites, which may make me come across as overly judgemental, and there's no denying Henderson is one ...

... players who didn't get on their soapbox about homosexuals then went aren't hypocrites, just greedy imo.

Henderson put himself up as being knowledgeable, about the subject, so can't even claim ignorance.

I think that's the crux of people's feelings about the subject. If Henderson hadn't come out and been vocal about the LGBTQ+ topic, he would've been called another greedy footballer for going over there for the money. The fact is, he DID support the movement and very visually too, the fact he went over there and the video that announced him showing him wearing the rainbow colours on an armband which was then broadcast in black and white and him then saying he was going to "educate" from within without mentioning the video spoke volumes. He said it was for footballing reasons also, sorry but the standard over there looks worse than non league and for a then current England international to drop that far down spelled the end.

It's very easy to support a cause if it doesn't affect you ...

Absolutely not, I'll welcome him like I would do with pretty much anyone we signed (within reason), however I am definitely not going to be hounding the club to sign him. If he signs then that's fine, if he doesn't then I don't really care.

This would’ve been part of my aforementioned diatribe. The only comment/observation I will make is this. If I tell my wife how to dress, not to look at other men, that she can’t drive a car unless I’m in it with her and many other things that prevent her from being equal to me, I would rightly be arrested and charged with controlling and coercive behaviour. Yet for a certain section of the community this is their ‘culture’ so it’s ok.

He massively ballsed up with Saudi. It was greed over values and his value position was good before then as a leader of players, but I’m not going to hate him because he knows he did wrong and it’s hugely bitten him on the arse. He’s not needed as a player now. Needs to start his coaching journey and see how he gets on, but I’m not for appointing coaches who aren’t technically right. Sentimental coaching appointments are normally a disaster.

Glad that I’m not in a minority on this! Twitter has quite a few saying “starts every game”, yet he hasn’t played in England for a long time and decided to go to Saidiwhen he didn’t need the money, just greed!

So no, absolutely not. Don’t even want him as a coach personally!

It can be difficult to stand by your principles if you're struggling to make ends meet. My mother was a church going woman with strict ethics who always taught us right from wrong. But she was also a hard drinking miner's wife bringing up four kids so no doubt didn't declare the money she made from her cleaning jobs.

Henderson, already a millionaire, threw away his principles and lost the respect of much of his home town entirely through greed.

SAFC are earning praise around the football world for the way we're developing young players who are a credit to us ...

... Henderson's 'ethics' of money before everything and lying to hide pure greed are the last influences we need to bring into the club.

Employ Henderson and you may as well get him to bring Darren Bent and Lee Clarke along.

I agree, he barely did anything, which makes the negative response even more bewildering to me.

Not really, it's a neutral position, he's an accomplished footballer with lots of England caps and a local lad to boot. Him playing half a season in Saudi is almost meaningless to me, I'm not against the players getting paid big when the football climate is the way it is now.

I just find this tension between, some very basic support for LGBT and playing football in a country that doesn't support that, quite odd. Save your anger for the Saudi regime, not footballers trying to secure their grandkids future.
