Sunderland took Millwall’s play-off spot – I hope they rot

Rod Liddle

Sunday May 14 2023, 12.01am, The Sunday Times

"Football can be a very beautiful game, even if this is not always apparent while you are watching it.

So it was for me last Monday afternoon as I gawped with a growing sense of horrible familiarity at Millwall’s spectacular second-half disintegration against Blackburn Rovers, a result which ensured we would be spared the misery of being defeated, later, in the play-offs.

As the players trooped off at half-time with Millwall 3-1 to the good, the Sky commentator assured his audience that we were dead certs for the play-offs. I wanted to throttle him. The lead seemed to me a house built on sand. I had not liked the way Rovers skipped through our defence, threatening every time they attacked.

But then the euphoria at the rather grandiosely named Stadium of Light was a bit much to take, too. Sunderland fans couldn’t believe their good fortune and were going jubilantly doolally.
A sporting and measured man would take the defeat on the chin and wish the Mackems the best of luck for the play-offs. But sadly I am not that man and I hope they rot. Or better still, Middlesbrough defeat them with a patently offside goal in the final. They are the form team, mind."

"I daresay they will consider it payback for that FA Cup semi-final in 2004 when a Tim Cahill goal sent Millwall through to a final against Manchester United, which of course we lost."

How ignorant and narrow minded to say that about a stadium named after, and built on, a mine where people toiled underground and sometimes lost their lives <doh>

Pity we were playing away rather than at home! However, I have a similar story regarding a Blackburn fan the wife works with. It started at Boxing Day when he posted on FB that he wanted to do the double over "those sad makems and put them in their place" so me bring the dutiful husband responded to the post for her and he's since posted other things about how Blackburn were going to best us! Now since they did us a favour (which I thanked him fully for <laugh>) he now thinks we were lucky and we'll get beat by Luton. His predictions are nailed on as usual :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Most of the bitter opposition fans stupidly use Sunderland's incredible support as a stick to try to beat us with ...

... because we go to their grounds, take over and out-sing them.

Fair enough, their endless whinging is fine by me, it gives us all a laugh and confirms how tinpot they are.

It's also funny how they've all been told, by Sky, to call us Mackems when we probably have more who aren't than are.

If you're talking about those directly connected to shipbuilding we probably have more Geordies.

There's some weak minded people out there who never let ignorance interfere with their prejudice <laugh>

The Ref could be the main man tomorrow.
Need him to be strong but fair, they'll be some challenges out there and we need to keep 11 on the pitch, we'll score which means they need 3 ( if no penalties) and I can't see where they'll get three goals from if I'm honest.
Give it all lads leave nothing in the dressing room, and the 1000 travelling have got to make the noise of 46000, easy peasy.HTL.
Let's hope he's better than the one on Sat. How the Luton lad didn't get a 2nd yellow for that trip on Clarke is beyond me

Hume’s headed goal on Saturday.
It was a low cross put in by Clarke.

There could be a good case made for more of these low crosses in because our little attackers can easily get their heads on them while giant defenders must bend down and be in some unnatural position to get their heads onto the ball. A high kick could lead to a penalty for us.

Good point mate.

I noticed, for Hume's goal, they set up expecting us to 'do a Luton' and fling it aimlessly into a crowded area. Once it was obvious we were intent on a short corner it pulled them out of shape. They had to send three defenders out to try to stop the cross which helped us.

We played it back, forward and back again which created space for Hume. He was very clever and drifted around them so he had the run on one of the Ninja Turtles in the box. The defender next to Hume couldn't challenge, without giving away a penalty, and Hume didn't have to jump. Watch it back and see how much ground Hume travels in the box.

Launching crosses into their area when they're set up, is pointless but making them move their defensive line was pure quality ...

... top marks to Mowbray, that's obviously been endlessly worked on.

From 1.18 on this clip, you can actually see Luton panicking <laugh>

Think I agree on all points. I said pens as soon as we got drawn with them (although I predicted a 1-1 draw on Sat)

Having said that, when you look at their recent form - 1 win in 5 stands out like a belisha beacon

Like you, am concerned with how direct they will go (although it only worked once on Sat and they didn't really threaten after they scored) and am thinking that if Alese is fit enough for the bench, then he's fit enough to play. I would be tempted to stick Anderson in there too

The "Gooch at centre half" thing can only last so long - with Huggins fit, I'd go back to a back 4 and play Huggins-Hume-O'Nien-Alese

I don't think Huggins or Alese are fit enough to play (as in 90 minutes) so it comes down to whether you start with them or see how the game goes and then bring them on to deal with a potential late onslaught. I'd be tempted to start unchanged and bring them on later in the game.

Mind games I reckon

I was about to share this bit and pint the same thing out:

But then the euphoria at the rather grandiosely named Stadium of Light was a bit much to take, too.

That article would be accepted if it was on a fansite or their local paper but instead it's written for a national paper and its all a bit weird!

Millwall are so well liked nationwide aswell! You will struggle to find anyone other than their own fans who didn't snigger at them ****ing it up.

Woo hoo, the penultimate match thread!!!

We already know exactly how Luton will play and it's tedious ...

... endless long diagonals, fouls and flinging aimless long balls into the box.

I'm predicting an early Sunderland goal and a second from a penalty when they lose their heads as they did after Hume's goal.
I'm also expecting the referee, who's stronger this time, to pull out a red or two yellows and have the Luton fans scratching their scabby heads as to why endless fouls should unjustly lead to punishment.

2-0 to Sunderland with Pritchard and a penalty ...

... Ha’way the Lads!!

I can never understand why we can’t start our next game the way we finish the last one, the first half seems to be always poor. Let’s hope it’s different this time and we start on the front foot.

TBH I think it's deliberate especially away from home, as at Preston.

You know the home team are under pressure to get into us and we gradually take control and quieten their fans.

Luton were exhausted in the last thirty minutes and our subs were full of running ...

... Luton will puff their chests out and be straight at us, once we settle we can start to press and start finding gaps.

We don't need to chase the game and, hopefully, the referee will be strong.

The game's on Sky so he won't want to be bullied by Luton crowding him and shouting all game.

@SkySports_Keith
Forwards Alex Pritchard & Patrick Roberts are both “touch & go” for tomorrow’s play-off at Luton, says Tony Mowbray.
Defender Aji Alese trained today and is set to be on the bench at Kenilworth Road [HASHTAG]#SAFC[/HASHTAG] ⚪
