With McGeady , Wyke, Grigg , McNulty and McGuire at his disposal I'd think he would go 4-3-1-2 , any 3 from those 5 should be enough at this level. McGeady as the 1.

We needed a couple of full backs who can overlap and add a bit of pace, McLaughlin looks a bit slow for that role, JR has to get it right with the left back. Its not JR's fault that we can't afford one. Its what he has to work with.
Many of the problems facing Ross would be inherited by a new regime.
Personally, given the players we've got, I'd not bother with a number 10 and play a midfield 3 of McGeouch, Dobson, and either Power or O'Nien. I'd play McGeady and Maguire cutting in on off the flanks and either Wyke or McNulty (probably McNulty as he's more mobile) as the centre forward.

The O'Nien sending off was a poor decision though. Haven't seen Wyke's. Being a referee is a tough job, I did the qualifications and then packed it in, so I usually avoid giving them stick. I have noticed some poor performances lately though. Not just in our games, I watched a non-league one totally influenced by the home crowd last week.

It was a poor decision, but you can absolutely see why he made it.

Without repays from various angles you can see why it was given.

He shouldn't have swung his arm and I suppose that in itself warrants punishment. Even if the ref didn't see it properly at the time you'd hope that the diving would be picked up on afterwards though.

Official Highlights:
Roker Report gave Leadbitter MOTM, but it looks like he had a hand in all three goals:
He was called for the foul that lead to the free kick.
His errant pass launched the 4v3 counter which lead to the second.
He allowed Maddison to make that dangerous diagonal ball, which eventually came back to Maddison for the third.

Had a quick scroll through most the comments, but I think they have missed what your real undoing was yesterday. Let's park Maddison to one side, because he always is a threat. Posh from what I've seen had some decent pre-season transfers, firstly their number 5 was solid at the back, Beever from Bolton in the Summer. Secondly and more importantly their number 7 - Mo Eisa, you didn't deal with him, record signing from Bristol C. I'm dreading them coming to our place (Gills) in October we are going to get spanked, and that's just after we have faced Pompey away!

I certainly hope so ;)

After viewing the replays, I believe O'nien's red card should be overturned, but if it isn't, it could be a blessing in disguise. JR may be forced into a revolutionary tactic and actually play a right back at right back and a left back on the left!!! If I remember right, Flannagan was bought as a right back who could play centre back if needed and McClaughlin was bought as a right back but neither of them ever play there.

Eisa had Ozturk isolated several times. I kept expecting Eisa to run right by Ozturk, but he never did.

I said before a ball was kicked that they were a better side than Pompey, nothing to change my mind.

For me them and Ipswich were always the teams to beat if we wanted automatic promotion.

I still think we are better individually if we can get the puzzle worked out though.

Over the moon we had a run of good results but we still only played well in patches of those games. JR still has to convince me tactically and yesterday was a real reality check that we aren’t going to run away with this league. Hopefully we can still strengthen before the window closes

Back end of last season we played a game with McGeady and Maguire with a central striker, cant remember which one but I think it was Grigg, and we looked very good in the final third. The midfield three are a bit more problematic, none are outstanding atm but we have so many, surely their is a blend in there from Leadbitter, Power, McGeouch, Dobson, O/9, Robson, Embleton, and Mumba.

Posh fan here.
I thought Maddison was the difference yesterday, and boy did he enjoy celebrating in front of your manager. Absolute key moment was Beevers' last ditch block as your guy was about to pull the trigger. Almost certain goal waiting to happen, then it's 2-1 and we normally stat shaking like a ****ting dog thereafter.
Shame we didn't get to see wearside Jack come back and make one of his gaffs, like the old days for us. Our performance at MK Dongs last week was far superior, played them off the pitch. Don't get too down, I go back a long way following Posh, and recall coming up to Roker Park in '68 and getting a 7 goal drubbing in the freezing cold, then spending all night stranded at Darlington station. We also got demoted for illegal bonuses related to this game, so there's your perspective.
I also attended the midweek game at your place about 4 years back in the cup, when that Korean midfielder put Tomlin on a stretcher after we looked pretty good.
Good luck in the play-offs any road.

Ross has appealed against the O/9 sending off, he has been very successful so far and my guess is that that will continue, and I hope some action is taken against Toney.

Sunderland AFC’s Luke O’Nien will be available for selection when Jack Ross’ side travel to Accrington Stanley on Saturday 14th September.
Following a successful appeal to the Football Association, O’Nien’s suspension has been withdrawn with immediate effect after a claim of wrongful dismissal was upheld by an Independent Regulatory Commission.
The 24-year-old was sent off for violent conduct during Sunderland's EFL League One fixture at Peterborough United on Saturday.

Just need the FA to sanction Toney instead.

So what's your opinion on Toney from the weekend? I don't mind players being annoying but to blatantly cheat to get a fellow professional sent off is massively out of order - he should be banned as per the new rule but the FA/EFL haven't got the balls to do that

On that one - SAFC have to pay to attend and go through the process to overturn the card - why isn't that cost levied onto the cheat who got our player sent off instead of onto our club? Also - why the hell should we pay for a referee's mistake? Can you imagine if this was real business and not football.

"We've built this building but we've made a couple of mistakes. This one will cost you £50k to put right and you have to pay it regardless of whether we do it"

Unbelievable way to run a business
