Yes and NO.
As I understand it the Catholic Club folded no so very long ago.
It was bought and renamed and reopened.
THEN for some reason the old name and signage reappeared and it seems to be open again and is once more called The Sunderland Catholic Club.

AT the time you are talking about they used to queue up for the Saturday Night Dance.
The place was jumping.
Even downstairs where I used to go was packed.

It was on a Saturday when we played there, we were from Liverpool and it was part of a tour of the North East which took in Gigs at Hartlepool we played The Quads Clubs, also gigs in Newcastle and Middlesboro.

Loads of pubs in my home village of Ryhope have gone the journey..The Toll Bar has already had a mention, but there is also the The Prince of Wales (Mitchy's), The Duke of Wellington (my local back in the day), The Pops Club, The Catholic Club, The Bluebell and The Queens Head.

Edit...Just found out that Ryhope Catholic Club is still alive and kicking although it is one of the places I have rarely ever been in..

I can also recall a pub called the Havelock but cant remember where that one was.
Also a pub that an Aunty of man ran for years called the Engineers Tavern, which was situated just next to the iron railway bridge near the approach to Wearmouth Bridge (coming from the Wheatsheaf),directly after the old Monkwearmouth railway station.
Then I remember that on Brooke Street, where I was born there was a pub on each corner, one was called the Richmond but cant remember the other. They were probably still there late 60,s maybe very early 70,s.
Pops maybe you can remember any of above.

Think it might be The General Havelock, sounds more like a hospital, near Cage Hill, hundreds round that area, one being the Sheet and Anchor, manager one Warney Cresswell now theres a one for Nostalgia. And for Pops area heres another, The Pheonix

A few of them pubs still very much around although a lot of them have different names these days..I also loved the Old 29's which was a cracking venue for the bands.
In the 60-70's one of the lads I used to go to matched with was always on about the " Inveru Gardens " - any ideas where it was ?

<cheers> Fantastic - we had some toppa ale houses/pubs/clubs in Sunderland with histories and memories
Your right, its real sad to visit some of them now, when I started drinking the pubs were heaving, characters everywhere, and it seamed like there was never a dull moment. There is a video in existence of a back room of some local after a launch of a ship, in which the riveters are having a party, all of them chipping in with turns songs and fancy dress, it looked like it was shot a hundred years ago, but many were recognisable as they they were still around when I started work in the 50's.
Hell I'm starting to feel old. <wah>
