Over the road to the Railway Tavern
After extensive research, well 10 mins anyway, the pub was called The Stone Bridge. Newly built didnt last very long as it was probably in the way of the Metro.

Yes and NO.
As I understand it the Catholic Club folded no so very long ago.
It was bought and renamed and reopened.
THEN for some reason the old name and signage reappeared and it seems to be open again and is once more called The Sunderland Catholic Club.
AT the time you are talking about they used to queue up for the Saturday Night Dance.
The place was jumping.
Even downstairs where I used to go was packed.
Good lad, starting to do me nut in.
Remember the North Moor? Like the wild west that place.![]()
Yes that req'd a gum shield on the way in
I can also recall a pub called the Havelock but cant remember where that one was.
Also a pub that an Aunty of man ran for years called the Engineers Tavern, which was situated just next to the iron railway bridge near the approach to Wearmouth Bridge (coming from the Wheatsheaf),directly after the old Monkwearmouth railway station.
Then I remember that on Brooke Street, where I was born there was a pub on each corner, one was called the Richmond but cant remember the other. They were probably still there late 60,s maybe very early 70,s.
Pops maybe you can remember any of above.

We had a canny rumble in there in the 60's, we did alright, but avoided a return match. That req'd Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson as bodyguards to go in with.
In the 60-70's one of the lads I used to go to matched with was always on about the " Inveru Gardens " - any ideas where it was ?A few of them pubs still very much around although a lot of them have different names these days..I also loved the Old 29's which was a cracking venue for the bands.
Whoops sorry I had read but obviously missed that one. Although I was asking a question about it!
Ivy House/Hendon Gardens, at the same time ?In the 60-70's one of the kads I used to go to matchey with was always on about the " Inveru Gardens " - any ideas where it was ?
There was some rough houses round there, especially on the Green and down Stoney Lane, real lively. Mind most were in the day. That req'd Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson as bodyguards to go in with.

Fantastic - we had some toppa ale houses/pubs/clubs in Sunderland with histories and memoriesYour right, its real sad to visit some of them now, when I started drinking the pubs were heaving, characters everywhere, and it seamed like there was never a dull moment. There is a video in existence of a back room of some local after a launch of a ship, in which the riveters are having a party, all of them chipping in with turns songs and fancy dress, it looked like it was shot a hundred years ago, but many were recognisable as they they were still around when I started work in the 50's.Fantastic - we had some toppa ale houses/pubs/clubs in Sunderland with histories and memories
