KIO's not606 Match Preview

This evening Dmitri Halajko takes his Norwich City U23 side to the ABAX Stadium to take on Peterborough United in the Southern Group F opening fixture of the Checkatrade Trophy. Formerly the ‘FA Trophy’ this season’s re-vamped and re-branded competition sees several sides with Category 1 Academy status from the Premier League and Football League Championship take part for the first time.

The Norwich City side must include six under 21 players in their starting line-up, but five first team players may also be fielded in the starting XI should they choose to do so.

Dmitri Halajko has hinted that first team players could be involved.

"We played their reserves a couple of weeks ago in a friendly, where we equipped ourselves quite well. We didn't have any senior boys that day, and they were slightly better than us, but it was a taste of what's to come,” he said.

"There will possibly be some first team involvement on Tuesday, but we'll wait and see. It's going to be something of a joint project."

“We’ll have some first-team support with us, as we normally do,” said Halajko, who followed Paul Lambert to Carrow Road from Colchester United.

“It’s really positive that we work so closely with the first team and that they take such a positive interest into the 23s programme.

“In terms of being in the changing room, being in the dug-out, I don’t think there’s many clubs who have the link as strong as we make it. So there will be possibly some first team involvement but it will be a joint project, as it will with most of the 23s games.”

The Posh have to field five players who started in their 2-0 win at Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday or five players who are set to start next Saturday's fixture with Swindon Town. Peterborough could also field five players with the most appearances in the league and cup so far this season to comply with the rules of the competition.

If the scores are level following 90 minutes, both teams will get one point. The game will then go straight to a penalty shoot-out with the winning team earning an additional point.

Posh Chief Grant McCann
Posh boss Grant McCann hinted following the win over MK Dons that a number of his players may be given a rest with Paul Taylor substituted in the second half with a knock.

Central defender Ryan Tafazolli is expected to play an hour as he begins his comeback from a hamstring injury.

I haven't checked Braveheart but I would imagine ex pats may well be able to listen to the Radio Norfolk commentary online for this one.

This is all a bit surreal really I think there's a CanaryCall after too, God knows how they're going to pan that one out <laugh>

So our youth team have basically put 9 goals past league one teams in 3 halves of football. Sounds like they're dominating. I'm increasingly encouraged by the look of our youth team.
