While I'd take a striker over a CB, Evans for me isn't the answer if we want numbers. At CB we have Mert, who other than lacking pace is a very good CB, Kosc who has been arguably the best CB in the league the last couple of seasons, and Gabriel who hasn't had much of a chance for us but looks like a slightly lower quality, or less developed, version of Kosc. On top of that we have Holding who has looked good in his very limited start with us and was player of this season for his club before joining us even at his young age (unless I've made that up, but I'm pretty sure that's what I've read!). Chambers and Monreal can deputise there if needed as well so it's not like we are short of options. I do think there is room for another CB, but honestly I think it needs to be someone who will be starting for us, or at the very least really pushing hard for a place in the team. If we can't get that I'd rather stick with what we have and use all our funds to get a striker. If we got Mustafi and not a striker, I'd be a bit annoyed but could understand the thinking if we couldn't get the striker we wanted. If we get Evans and no striker I'll be really frustrated.
Firstly people forget he was Uniteds best defender during the 2010-11 Season. Now I'm not saying he's a top quality defender and would not be my first choice by any means but.. At least he's a 'proper' defender. I'm getting fed up with all the 6'0 lightweight ball playing centrebacks we keep chasing. For me Gabriel and Koscielny is a ****ing disaster. At least with Evans we get someone who will be disciplined and physically capable of 'fighting' for position against the leagues bigger forwards. I don't really care about technical ability.
Best defender in 2010/11? He made 13 league appearances for them! How the hell can you make that judgement based on so few games? You have absolutely no evidence at all to show that he was their best defender and judging by his lack of game time, I have no idea how you've come to that conclusion. I don't either. But he's not that good a defender. If we want to be winning big titles, like the league or the Champions League, he isn't the type of player we require. And please don't bother pointing to the titles he won under Ferguson. Otherwise we as well be signing Tom Cleverly, Anderson and Darren Fletcher. One of Ferguson's main strengths was making average players look better than they were. It isn't one of Wenger's.
Evans? I thought Wenger was interested in Phil Jones? We could do a job lot for both Seriously though, if you buy Phil Jones I won't have laughed so much since we shipped a knackered Sylvestre to you
My mistakes I meant 2012-13 Season. United won the league, Evans with 40 apps was a key part. He's a decent defender. Not great player. All we need is a good defender. We have enough quality on the ball. Im surprised we haven't gone after Subotic. Still a good age, no longer first choice at Dortmund. Would do a good job. I wouldn't mind Smalling either.
Aye, at the same time they were proclaiming Wilshere was going to be England's second coming. Goes to show what injuries and unfulfilled potential can do.
The only season he made 40 appearances was in the 2011/12 season. United finished 2nd that year. Phil Jones also made around 40 appearances that season. As did Antonio Valencia. Why don't we sign those players as well? If you actually mean the season they won the league in 2012/13, he made 30 appearances in all competitions. He made 23 league appearances and started 21 league games in that season, according to ESPN. http://www.espnfc.com/player/83176/jonny-evans?season=2012 21 league starts from 38. So he featured in slightly over half of their league matches and you're saying that in that season they won the league, he was their best defender? I'm not buying it. He may have done a fairly solid job, but so did the aforementioned players. It doesn't mean we should sign them. We already have enough 'decent but not quite good enough' players in our squad, frankly. He's injury prone and has already been ruled out until the end of 2016. We have enough injury problems as it is. I'd rather we go for someone who doesn't get injured so much, especially at the age of 27 when these should be his golden years. If we are going to spend £30+ million on a centre-half, Giminez from Atletico is definitely worth it.
Those who have Twitter accounts would have heard of a transfer target being described as "The Madness".It would appear the The Madness is Griezman.
Something we already knew http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/arsenal-boss-arsene-wenger-admits-8690847
He is actually in full troll mode. It's so ridiculous I'm half assuming he knows he's saying it as a wind up. But deep down we know he isn't and he's just a completely inept and clueless f**kwit without any idea with how to manage a club in the modern game and scared to admit it.
Wenger started off as a blessing but now he's become a curse. His early frugality helped us build a great stadium and massively increase our revenue. However, he can't seem to shake the need to penny pinch and it's stagnated the team. Only solution is to change the manager and the overall principles of frugality amongst the management. The biggest fear is it continues when the new manager comes in....
We are all going to look like a bunch of ****ers if Wenger pulls off a last minute Griezmann signing. Make it so.
I don't think anyone needs to feel stupid even if he does manage a major signing. He just hasn't looked at all positive in the transfer market and appears to dither along living in hope that someone will agree to join us.
This transfer rumour thread is the worst it's been since it's inception. Even the people posting the rumours are thinking what's the point...
To be fair. Most of us knew Wenger was most likely to make his moves right at the end of the window. He does this almost every year. Yet we still freak out when he does it. Sometimes it works to great (Ozil) and sometimes it's a complete disaster (Benzema/Gotze etc..)
True. One thing is for sure. Wengers getting ALL the stick but Gazidis is just as guilty for screwing up this window. Back in the day we used to land our targets, ever since Gazidis took charge it seems we fail to land at least 50-60% of the players we bid for.
