I am not sure
If Jose wants to swap being the Captain for being a squad back up at Manure then that is his decision, a poor one in my opinion and he will slightly sour the special bond that has with our club. I wouldn't begrudge him that move after what he has achieved here but I will feel a little bit disillusioned with Jose.

Edit: it is no coincidence that Rickie and Jose and even Adam and Morgan went from League One to become international players. The club had a massive part in their development and a little loyalty would be nice on this occasion.

S_A - I will not feel disillusioned with Fonte if he left - I would be very sad and a little concerned over who would play beside VVD. He has been a fantastic servant to the club and the team spirit he has engendered has played a huge part in our gradual ascent up the EPL. When Poch walked out and there was a sell-off of players it was Fonte who pulled the squad together in preseason and what we have achieved thereafter has been remarkable and much credit goes to him. He would go with my gratitude and my best wishes. Only I really want him to stay.

I say " a bit disillusioned" because if he truly loved the club like I believed he does he wouldn't even be comtemplating moving. Before the Euros he was quoted as saying that he wants to manage Saints one day and now it seems as though that he thinks that he is too big for us after becoming a European Champion.
I still love Jose and wish him the best but I feel it would be better all round if he stayed here as a hero rather than being a small fish at Manure.

Could do with some good news really, Twitter and saintsweb have gone into complete meltdown

Hmm - I am wondering why.

My feelings on Fonte is if we get around £15m. Then replace him with a good young(ish) cb then I have no problem with Fonte going.

We are still looking at a young cb to be back up, so would probably mean 2cbs in.

Personally, I think it would be a huge loss. He is our captain. But if he has had his head turned, then as with Lallana, we have no choice. I will look down on him if he goes.

Huge loss as a character I agree. But Fonte is very much at the age he will start to decline.

As I like to do percentages every time a player looks like going. I am giving this a 60/40 chance he leaves.

Going on Saints record with quotes about staff this quote from August 11th should confirm that we will be looking for a new centre-back and captain soon enough! :emoticon-0102-bigsm

"It is important to keep Jose Fonte at Southampton," Puel said.

"He is a very important player for the team, a good player and I don't see that it is a possibility for him to leave us."

Did you see their centre backs last season?
In desperate need of a defender of his calibre
Just to add the Maureen likes strong characters in his side - leaders - and Fonte will do that role at the back as John Terry did for him at Chelsea. He was interviewed on Bein TV and he made that point when he was discussing Ibra'vic - said he had made a huge difference to the dressing already as a leader.
