The 2016 Olympic Games officially starts on 5th August with the opening ceremony. The Olympic football tournament starts on August the 3rd [can never quite work out why they do this] with little fanfare. So here's the Olympic Games thread for those other sports that once every 4 years people remember are just as good as football in their own way. I know that posters will sometimes be bored, sometimes be cynical, and then sometimes be absolutely enthralled. For me, it is still, far and away the best sports games event on the planet. Here's a Rio 2016 Olympic Games promotional video to get you in the mood:

Looking forward to the games, but doubt it will be as good as 2012 in London. Do you remember how everyone predicted we would make a complete hash of it? Turned out great. Does feel a bit like this has sneaked up on us though, despite it being in the news. Need to get myself in the correct frame of mind. Come on, GB<diva>

Yes, I agree. The Rio Olympics and Paras will have to go some to be as good as London. Possibly the best Games of all time. Even neutrals and rivals said it was at the very least brilliant. Still not quite sure how the UK managed to organise something at all, let alone so well. Might have had something to do with us not trying to squeeze the budget until the pips squeaked.! :)

I can't believe that the London Olympics was 4 years ago - it seems more like 2! I enjoy things that you normally don't see on TV, like archery and dressage, especially if there's a chance of a British gold.

The London Anniversary Games, held very recently, nearly captured the atmosphere on the athletics track once or twice. Inside that delightful stadium [never let any WHU supporters see that comment] with a capacity crowd watching Mo Farah, I got caught up in it again. A really good time, and Farah is in unbeatable form.

Tell you what, how about reliving the real thing.? The 2012 10,000 Metres:

There needs to be a shake up of what sports are in the Olympics. Football (the players don't care), Golf (no one cares) Modern Pentathlon (wtf?) and Table Tennis (like table football) out. Squash, Karate, Netball and Orienteering in.

I must admit I don't see the point in Golf being there myself. Then again, Poetry used to be in the Olympics. I think racket and bat sports are fine, so Table Tennis ought to be in. I'd also go with Squash, Karate, Netball [thought those 3 were already there] and Orienteering. Agreed, Football probably no, although try telling that to Jack Cork. He enjoyed it. Golf, a definite pointless no-no though. Modern Pentathlon harks back to earlier Games. We need a couple of those sports to remain.

Table tennis is a fabulous sport to play and watch. Leave it in please when you reach that position.
