Hull City open talks with Roberto Martinez for next manager

Hull City are expected to step up their search for a new manager today by holding talks with former Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

City are eager to appoint a permanent successor to Steve Bruce by the middle of next week and have begun to work through a short-list of targets.

Martinez ranks highly among the bookmakers' favourites for the vacant post at the KCOM Stadium and the Mail understands the Spaniard is due in the region to speak with vice chairman Ehab Allam today.

Current caretaker boss Mike Phelan, who served as assistant to Bruce for the final 18 months of his reign, is also set to be interviewed ahead of overseeing City's friendly clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

American coach Bob Bradley also emerged as a surprise new candidate for the job last night with the current Le Havre boss installed as a bookies favourite.

Another two candidates remain under consideration and the Tigers expect to be in a position to name Bruce's successor by either Tuesday or Wednesday.

That would then give the new boss 10 days to prepare the opening weekend date with champions Leicester.

Although City yesterday played down national reports that Martinez has already been interviewed for the job, the 42-year-old is certainly a prominent figure in their thoughts.

The 2013 FA Cup winner, whose CV includes spells at Swansea, Wigan and Everton, is highly regarded by the City hierarchy but it remains to be seen if he could be convinced to take the reins at a club currently enduring a turbulent pre-season.

Martinez has already turned down the chance to take over at Belgian side Anderlecht this summer as he awaits his return to management and a reported annual salary of £3.5m during his time at Goodison Park could also pose a stumbling block in City's pursuit.

Phelan also remains a genuine contender as he leads the Tigers through pre-season.

The 53-year-old has already taken charge of the friendly games with Scunthorpe United and Barnsley and has made no secret of his desire to make the step up into management.

A lack of frontline experience will count against Phelan but he is known to be a popular figure with the current squad and coaching staff left behind by Bruce.

City's interview process will not be concluded until after the weekend. but last night saw the surprise name of Bob Bradley leap into the bookies' reckoning.

The former USA and Egypt coach, currently at French side Le Havre, has never managed in England before, but interest is known to have come from Europe.

Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett is another name to have been linked but the desire to make a quick appointment would make that pursuit difficult. Sources in the West Midlands have also said there has been no contact made with Birmingham at this stage.

City's energies are being focused upon on finding a successor to Bruce but there is still a chance that a first breakthrough could be made in the transfer market before an appointment is confirmed.

A list of targets drawn up by chief scout Stan Ternent remains active, despite the exit of Bruce last week. The Tigers' only completed business this summer is the capture of rookie goalkeeper Will Mannion.

I don't think I've ever seen a positive post from pattynchips about Hull City or football in general for that matter. He dominated the HDM forum to such an extent that I, for one, stopped using it and he is now infesting these boards with his anti Hull City bile.
I seem to remember that he used to shout loudly on the HDM forum about the eggchasing game and a black and white clad team which apparently divides this city.
HTF can he say Steve Bruce wasn't successful when he was the most successful manager City have ever had ?

We understand City won't conclude interviews until start of next week, but hope to have manager appointed in time for second game in Austria.

the inference from those allegedly ITK on here was that not only had he been interviewed but he had been offered the job, also that he`d accepted it !!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the silly season on here and to make it worse we have all the current goings on at City. I don't think Bob Bradley is a good choice for City manager, looks like plenty of other guys who maybe look good on paper but we need a steady experienced set of hands at this time and somebody with several years experience in the top flight not an experimental manager

Personally I'd rather see someone different. We know exactly what we'll get with Martinez and I don't like what he gives, while Premier League managers also know exactly how to beat him. I'd quite like to see Bradley here as it goes, and there's the added benefit of him previously doing well with Anne.
