Goodwood so far 0-3, two seconds and a third, so here is what to ignore Thursday unless you are looking for Placepot bankers:
In the opener, Stargazer looks like one to avoid having not been seen since April and with no fast ground form. There used to be an adage about top weights in three-year-old handicaps and Ode To Evening cannot be discounted off a 6lb higher mark than when winning at Newmarket as he is one of four representing Mark Johnston. Behind that day were Dwight D and Banksea (weighed down by my money) and I cannot see grounds for thinking they will reverse the form. The one that I am most drawn to is SCARLET DRAGON, carrying a 6lb penalty for his facile latest victory, who will hopefully be ridden up with the pace again with the same result.
The Richmond Stakes looks like just a watching brief as Blue Point looked like a potential top two-year-old on debut and faces a couple of decent types in Mehmas and Intelligence Cross here. There certainly should not be a lack of pace as four of the quintet like to be in the van.
Big Orange and Quest For More meet again in the Goodwood Cup – there was only a neck in it last year but I would not like to call it this time as Roger Charlton’s gelding was hindered by my cash twelve months ago.
In the Lillie Langtry Stakes, is Pamona the next Simple Verse? She was an unfancied 25/1 shot when victorious at York on her first start for Ralph Beckett but that does look the best form on offer. Perhaps flashing her tail was just a personality quirk rather than a sign that she may not be reliable.
Need to find a pencil for the notebook in time for the 4:20 – some very interesting fillies from some of the big yards (but I hope Frankie wins on Amabilis).
