Which is why Maradona can be rated higher than Pele, who never played outside his own country. Though when it was rumoured that Pele might move abroad the Brazilian parliament suspended unimportant things like discussing dam projects, the elimination if poverty etc to have him declared a national treasure which meant he couldn't be sold to a foreign company.
As Jimmy Greaves said, to him you have to rate Maradona more highly. Napoli had won nothing, Maradona arrives
and they win the league twice, the Italian Cup, the Cup Winners Cup. Maradona look leaves and nothing since, even a spell in Serie B. Even people not around at the time can reel off the names of many of the Brazil team of 1970 and even the one of 1958. But they can't do the same with the Argentina teams with Maradona in which won the World Cupnor the one he got to the final virtually single-handedly.

Even Serie C.

Pele had signed a contract with Inter shortly after the 62 world cup, but there were riots in Brazil and they besieged the home of the Santos owner, so he begged for the contract to be ripped up, which Inter did.

At least the back pages weren't all about Ronaldo. In fact, there's pretty much nowt on the Euro final.

Thank God for Andy Murray and Lewis Hamilton for once.

Haven't seen the back pages of any actual papers, but their web pages have reams of stuff. I wonder if the web pages of German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and other papers are as full of stuff about a final not involving their country?

Front page lead for the big 3 Italian papers.

I would think the Spaniards will have it as headline news.

Not headline, but front page. http://www.abc.es They actually have a headline about Portugal dedicating the victory to Portugal which our papers seem to have avoided. Surprised how small the circulation of Spanish papers are. That link is to their top seller. You get some nonsense in our papers There were pictures of Portugese celebrating in London with someone commenting " There are more Portugese celebrating here than anywhere else. This is why London is the best city in the world". Leaving aside the fact London isn't the best city in the eorld, that will come as a surprise to the French. Thierry Henry was saying last night they will never hear the end of it as everyone in France knows someone of Portugese descent as they are the largest immigrant group in France.

Bobby Charlton said the greatest player he ever saw was Di Stefano.
Eusebio was a great player, and a great person, but .I wouldn't rate him above Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, Di Stefano,
Puskas. Or John Charles.
Wouldn't argue with any of that. It would be like arguing about the best beer, or most beautiful woman, etc.

What a poor excuse for a Final this was. The Final actually summed up the whole euro 2016.
The main action has been in the streets sadly.

imo, Euro 2016 will be best known for the underdogs. Those nations where nothing much was expected but reached so much higher. 1)Wales, 2)Iceland, 3) R.O.I, 4)Northern Ireland. The fans of these nations can be so very proud of what was achieved on the pitch.

Thankfully it is now over.

So the Motherwell / Iceland chant will hit the PL soon. ?

<laugh>

I'm guessing there's not many people in Lisbon then.

Probably. And a few months later it will be rugby fans claiming it as their song. After all FC fans accused Wigan of nicking "their"song. Their song being "ganning along the Boulevard to see the FC aces".

All I can say about the match was it was poor advert for Football. Newcastle fans must wondering however who this guy Sissoko was, as he certainly can't be the same player that played for them last season.

No arguments about the woman. It was Julie Christie in the 1960s.
She was still rather delectable in 2006...the director of the film "Away from Her" is the daughter of a good friend of mine. He invited me to the Toronto Film Festival premiere of the movie, which sadly I couldn't attend. He waxed lyrically about her looks & demeanour even at her advanced age. A missed opportunity for me :emoticon-0100-smile
It's a sad film...
