Let's have a survey within a survey: how many people on here watched Saints before we got to the First Division in 1966? I don't quite qualify, my first game was Saints' first in the top flight in August 1966, 1-1 against Man City at the Dell.

Just about! You were one of those I had in mind when I asked the question Beddy!Errr like 20 years before 1966? does that count...........
My first game I think was December 1946 just after my uncle was discharged from the forces. We went to celebrate his demob. The next week we went to Fratton where I met life long friends. As a consequence we exchanged visits bye weekly between the Dell and Fratton as often as possible well into our teens. We kept this up often even in late adulthood upto about 4 years ago. Sadly my friends have all gone to the big ground in the sky the last one about 7 weeks ago.Just about! You were one of those I had in mind when I asked the question Beddy!

I miss each one of them.............
That's one of my fears....don't know what I'll do without my best friends. I'm going to be selfish and go first. I know a lot of people from my Dad's generation (he would have been your uncle's age BT) did the same, alternating between the Dell and Fratton depending on who was at home. Younger members might find it incredible, but there must have been hundreds if not thousands who supported both clubs in those days.My first game I think was December 1946 just after my uncle was discharged from the forces. My dad started go to football in the mid to late 60s and living in Locks Heath he went to see both sides for a few seasons.
You'd think that experience would temper any dislike toward the blue lot, but he has little fondness for them.
I think things turned during some Derby days in the 80s
Only one derby day in the 80s.. FA Cup 4th round at Fratton. Steve Moran!!
There may have been one season of derbies lay 80's, but they don't count![]()
Yeah he was at that 84 game and the forgotten 87 league match.
In the early days Pompey were in div 1. I have to admit I dipped my hand in my pockets to help out their cause during their financial downturns more than once just as my mates did during our recent problems. Also yes I did dare to go to a Pompey match in my saints shirt in the early 60's. I had my leg pulled quite a bit while I was there but no violence or nastiness in any form. Sad to see the hatred that exists today.......we had a lot of laughs at both the Dell and Fratton and a lot of leg pulling from the other fans of both clubs who new of our continued friendship over the years.......what a pity the fans of today cannot share such memories.
That reminds me of going to Carrow Road Riverside End (the opposite end to the away support as I live locally (bit of a give away in the name!) for a Southampton game and leaping up and yelling when we scored to equalise on my own in the middle of the Norwich fans. Just a few mutterings and no nastiness whatsoever, even though I was "undercover"! Norwich City has always felt to me to be a (pre-Liebherr) club similar to Southampton with pretty decent fans.In the early days Pompey were in div 1.
