Can I ask you to fix all the messes we've made over the last couple of decades and see if your generation can get past the idea that killing people is a great solution to problems? :emoticon-0138-think

They'll be no guessing about me....

54 on July 17th, Hampshire born and bred. Born in East Dean, lived in Lockerley [hence the user name], went to Stockbridge Secondary School/Test Valley Comprehensive and now live in Swindon.

Played in goal until I was 45 and generally let lots of goals in - won one cup and one league in all that time and only ever made it to Southampton Senior or whatever it was for a few games - played one game in the Wiltshire League [let in eight goals never played again],

Former electrician, quality assurance and amateur graphic designer.

Retired at 51 :1980_boogie_down:

Overall though, an utter numpty.

Lockerley used to be part of my old stomping ground as a BT Engineer . Never got to work in the Army place under the hill ( West Dean was it ? ) .

West Dean Royal Navy Ammo Dump. It is now a business park as far as I know. Near to both pubs that used to be my locals over the years on and off - The Brewer's Arms and The Red Lion which is now a private house.

Once there was a phoned in bomb-scare for the RNAD and the police came around Glebe Meadow telling householders to stay out of their back gardens. If a bomb had gone off at that time in the 'Dump' most of that area would be a smoking crater and working in the front garden wouldn't have made any difference :emoticon-0140-rofl:

I used to play football for West Dean - four cup finals in row, lost them all, not that it's burned into my mind or anything.

You clearly don't remember it at all :emoticon-0102-bigsm

How can it be a Business park , it was under the hill wasn't it ?

Well blow me, after making a pun on here re SAGA I received an email this morning saying my Bike insurance (Bennetts) has now been taken over by 'Saga Services Limited'.

I look forward to their very special offers.

Let's have a survey within a survey: how many people on here watched Saints before we got to the First Division in 1966? I don't quite qualify, my first game was Saints' first in the top flight in August 1966, 1-1 against Man City at the Dell.

I was born 27 years after your first game Chilco, but interesting fact: my first match at St Marys was Japan vs Nigeria, 2001.

I remember you telling me before, but I thought I'd give you the opportunity to say it again! Yes, 3 weeks after England won the World Cup, we were watching Saints in Division One. Good times, good times...

Ta. ;)

Significantly, I'm not at all sure I would have gone that first time if England hadn't won the World Cup. I'm not sure I would have persisted with football at all. It kind of throws into light how a successful individual or team can inspire kids to do one thing rather than another. Imagine how many kids may have turned away from football because of England's success rate since.

My Dad took me to some 'reserve games' in the early 60s, I remember little apart from the wonder of floodlights and being 'grown up' enough to have my own cup of tea.

My first solo was Man U in 1968 I think. Nearly crushed to death in the Archers. We drew, I think a certain Mr G Best scored.

Yes, I was always impressed by The Dell's floodlights. There was something about having eight of them on the roof of the stands and not 4 in the corners. And I always felt they lit up the pitch better than other grounds. Of course, nowadays, nearly every modern stadium has the lights positioned as part of the stand, rather than in the corners.

I lived at Dean as a nipper....don't know if it was east or west......only thing that creeps into my mind was the local pub had two shut down times . One side closed an hour/half hour before the other side as the pub was on the Hants Wilts boarder.....so I guess that made it the East Dean. Lived right opposite the school which was not too far from the railway station. Was also introduced to football there by a certain Terry Paine. He would have been 3/4 years older than me then. Interesting times as we were not in the E U either then and we were very happy......OK Ill get me coat...........
