Boris was mayor of London, London was a huge remain supporter, people who voted for boris for mayor voted against him for this, i doubt he picked up any voters in London who didn't elect him to be Mayor. I think what your trying to say is this vote was based on class? which to a degree i will agree, I based my vote purely on advice i had received from people like myself. Work full time to provide for my family, no real savings, mortgage, no pension, I believe alot of people similar to myself voted for change. I believe that if i had a large pension stacks of savings and earned large bonuses from working in the city i would have voted to remain.
Why should I care about other countries and what they are thinking about doing? That's for them. Surely that means the EU may lose more countries where is the unity? The EU therefore isn't unified and the UK isn't unified. Don't forget the vote was 52% to 48% with some people not voting so who knows what they think. Scotland and N Ireland both voted for remain. The last thing this has done is unify.
I have never had your gift for tact and diplomacy Fats. So I'll spell it out in simple English, and tough luck if I offend anyone; Our country's future is being decided by thick ****ing racists.
The EU will crumble in the next 10 years IMO. More members will have referendums in the not too distant future.
I didn't realise that by losing Scotland and probably Northern Ireland, that it would make our country stronger and more united! Now we just wait for the Government to magical create these fantastic jobs, and invest the supposed billions we spend on the EU in to the NHS and young people, because we're the ones who have to deal with this decision that spoilt baby boomers have lumbered us with. I've heard it said that society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. What an ugly tree we have just planted, with such bitter fruit. Someone please hold me....
I completely disagree with this statement but i like your honesty. You could be a new breed of politician.
Fran, I was thinking of you when I wrote that post - I knew you'd be offended. I believe that you voted leave because you thought about things with a degree of common sense and intelligence and took the decision you thought was best. I have no problem with that. I am certainly not one of the intelligentsia you talk of, however I know that there are people out there who are not intelligent, do not have common sense and do not apply reasoned thought before making decisions. Life is made up of a large range of different people. That is not being rude or critical. It is part of life. It is one of the reasons that I said from the start that I did not want this vote to happen. If I had a problem with my electrics, I wouldn't call a plumber.
My vote was NOTHING to do with Immigration , I may be thick , but I am NOT a RACIST !!!!!!!! I think people of both sides need to calm down , I thought this board was better than this .
I wasn't offended and certainly never thought of you as one of the intelligentsia, fats (sorry, couldn't resist that opening).
I agree with that. There are plenty of morons who voted just because they like Boris Johnson. Fran and I and plenty of others are not amongst them. Anyone with a degree of intelligence would have researched both sides and made a decision based on that.
I don't ever think in class. I hate it. I have walked into my local Toolstation several times recently while picking up materials for the work being done on my bathroom. Dozens of times. I called in one time with my suit on as I'd been to see a customer and I was told that they don't get many posh people in there. FFS! I hater class. I am the son of a milkman brought up in a small country town being taught to work hard for my things and value life, possessions, and treat people as I'd expect to be treated. Now I find myself doing "ok" and only "ok" really, but I wear a suit to work and drive what I think is a nice car. Now I'm a different class or posh. I hate that so much. I am still me. "Work full time to provide for my family, no real savings, mortgage, no pension, I believe alot of people similar to myself voted for change" Not only have you described you here, you have described me. I voted remain as did a lot of people I know like me. Says nothing.
Which is exactly what I am saying. Tom here is the killer point for me. I believe that not enough people would have done what you have just said. I truly believe the better marketing and rhetoric won this vote.
They may well now. I think the EU may go, and may have gone with us in, but better to lead that new change at that time. In my view.
That's what gets up ordinary people's noses...they know they are not racist, compared with most of the rest of the world, we are the most tolerant people there are. It's not perfect here on a person to person basis, but over all it's a great country and we are fed up with being taken for mugs. Not able to deport people who are traitors to the country they live in...not being able to deport criminals...courts designed to protect the bad against the good. Decent people being threatened with deportation because they haven't had the sense to kill someone. These are all individual little things which add up to one dirty great whole.
Ok fair enough, i know you travel alot for your work and deal with companies worldwide i'm guessing this was a main contributor in why you voted remain, i understand that this out vote could complicate things for you. I work at an independant accident repair centre where we carry out mainly insurance work. These insurance companies who are governed by the EU are bringing in more and more standards and demanding more certificates and tools that will never see the light of day. The cost of sending staff on training courses and buying specialist tools that will never get used is crippling. There have been 5 bodyshops in a 50 mile radius of me that have gone out of business in the last 2 years due to increasing overheads. The vote is not based on intellignece or race its based on peoples own personal situation. I will do what i believe to be best for me and my family same as what you would. Its my veiw that i will be more secure with the UK out of the EU i may well be wrong but the way it was going i'm glad we have voted out and i am excited to see what the future holds.
