That Sky article has been updated today. It now reflects the position I posted, and which Qwerty backed up. Sky previously were saying that 8th would get EL.

On that basis, I think the most likely permutations are as follows:

    1. If Utd win the FA Cup, Liverpool win the EL, and Liverpool finish 7th:

Utd and whoever finishes 6th (or 5th, if Utd are overtaken) between us and West Ham go into the EL group stage.

    2. If Utd win the FA Cup, Liverpool win the EL, and Liverpool finish 8th:

Utd and whoever finishes 6th (or 5th, if Utd are overtaken) between us and West Ham go into the EL group stage. The other side (finishing 7th) goes into the EL qualifying.

    3. If Utd win the FA Cup, Liverpool lose the EL, and Liverpool finish 7th:

Utd and whoever finishes 6th (or 5th, if Utd are overtaken) between us and West Ham go into the EL group stage. Liverpool (finishing 7th) go into the EL qualifying.

    4. If Utd win the FA Cup, Liverpool lose the EL, and Liverpool finish 8th:

Utd and whoever finishes 6th (or 5th, if Utd are overtaken) between us and West Ham go into the EL group stage. The other side (finishing 7th) goes into the EL qualifying.

    5. If Utd lose the FA Cup, Liverpool win the EL, and Liverpool finish 7th:

Palace and whoever finishes 5th go into the EL group stage. Whoever finishes 6th goes into the EL qualifying.

    6. If Utd lose the FA Cup, Liverpool win the EL, and Liverpool finish 8th:

Palace and whoever finishes 5th go into the EL group stage. Whoever finishes 6th goes into the EL qualifying.

    7. If Utd lose the FA Cup, Liverpool lose the EL, and Liverpool finish 7th (or 8th):

Palace and whoever finishes 5th go into the EL group stage. Whoever finishes 6th goes into the EL qualifying.

I think this illustrates (if I am correct) that whilst Liverpool's final league position is of relevance to us, whether or not they win the EL is of no relevance - eg scenarios 2 and 4 give the same answer. (But whether or not Utd win the FA Cup is absolutely of relevance.)

Sorry, does it mean that if Liverpool win the Europa cup and finish eighth and man u win the fa cup that seventh would lose their spot?
Seventh that could very well be us!
Is the Europa cup final after the fa one?
    This could be torture!

There are times when you wish you could just stick one post from a thread. This is one of them.

My head hurts....let's just finish 6th. 7th is far too dodgy. However, even if we just miss out it will still have been a strong finish to the season....our performance in 2016 has been impressive and bodes well for next season. I don't accept that just missing out on the Europa by the odd point or place defines this season.

You've just described scenario two then. Which I have said, and believe, includes 7th place going into EL qualifying.

Liverpool wouldn't be qualifying for the EL by virtue of their league position, and therefore wouldn't have anything to give up in exchange for taking up a CL place.

I didn't bother with that one, because I didn't see it as too likely. But actually, it is quite possible now. (Poor West Ham fans. Going into this weekend aiming for 4th, and now in danger of finishing 8th).

Man Utd would qualify for the EL group stage. We would qualify for the EL - I think it would direct into the group stage, but it might be into the qualifying rounds. West Ham would miss out altogether.

So actually if man united fail to beat palace and liverpool fail in winning europa, Then even if we finish 7th it still wont be enough!

Correct. Palace, Utd and Liverpool would go into the EL. (Although, as mentioned, whether or not Liverpool win the EL has no impact on us - given the other factors in your scenario it would just impact whether Liverpool go into the EL or into the CL)

Only by finishing in the top six can we afford Palace to win the cup.

Although we might just have to now replace all references to Utd qualifying for the EL, with City. The door is wide open for you Louis...

    FT: City 2-2 Arsenal

Two wins in the final two games now guarantee that MUFC qualify for the UCL.

Should help us as they've got West Ham up next and should be more fired up now.

Sorry to potentially throw this all up again, but I don't think I'm reading this in the same way.
If Liverpool win the Europa league then that means there are only two Europa places for next season.

    So that's either 5th & FA cup winners or 5th & 6th.

So if Palace win the cup, Liverpool win Europa then 6th won't qualify

I've now decided that I like this competition, and will be gutted if we fail to qualify. Should we fail to do so, I shall insist that we've dodged a bullet.

I think if we beat Palace we'll probably finish 6th though.

If we don't beat Palace it'll be a massive anticlimax after the brilliance of the last few weeks!

Also.......with respect ot qualifying for Europe......no-one seems to have mentioned the FairPlay league. What happened to that one?

The Fair Play League doesn't return a European spot anymore. There was a shakeup and now the prize is purely financial.

In fact, the Premier League haven't even bothered updating the FPL this season because it's pretty pointless now.

I'll be cheering on Man Utd on Tuesday, specifically so I don't have to cheer them on in the CF. Even though I'll probably be watching that one from a bar in New York, so no one would know, I'd still feel dirty cheering for them.

I'm quietly confident that Chelsea will get something at Anfield, it's actually W Ham who worry me. Liverpool have other things to think about, West Ham will feel, like us, that they need maximum points from their remaining games.
