Last season who was your better striker? Based on the whole season I personally think that Berbatov was better than Rooney
Who scored the most goals? Berbatov. But you can claim that Rooney didn't play as an out-and-out striker for some of the season. So meh.
Rooney didn't have a great season but when it came down to the business end of the season, Berbatov performed his usual vanishing act. Hard to say but I'll go for Rooney, as I can't have Berbatov.
Andy King mate, it's currently 4 votes to 3 so hardly a universal result.. and you said last season, I bet if you said "in general" Rooney would win it..
You also said about Rooney 'I'm just saying that he had huge periods where he was out of form where, frankly, I would have picked Owen in front of him because he couldn't hit a barn door from two yards'.
We probably played our best football when someone was with Berbatov. I often get the feeling he gets lonely up there by himself, I doubt the opposition defenders stimulate him with conversation and fine wine.
Rooney. Played at his best in the important games and moments in the season. Berba was a bit of a flat track bully last season.
Rooney has had a hair transplant and Berbatov has a large forhead. If they weren't average/good footballers they'd be virgins.
Overall Berbatov had the better season obviously. Though when push come to shove in the business end of the season Rooney dragged us over the finishing line. Rooney had the bigger impact but this was Berbatov's best season for us. Ironically this was Rooney's worst season for us and he still made the difference in the title race.
That's what I was thinking. Berbatov had much better form, but Rooney is still the better player and that showed at many points last season (City in the PL and FA Cup immediately spring to mind). Interestingly enough, although Berbatov scored more goals, both players were responsible for us picking up 10 PL points through the goals they scored. So, given that Rooney got more assists and scored important goals against Rangers and Chelsea in the CL, you'd have to say Rooney was objectively more important to our season.
I think you need to look beyond goals. For me, Berbatov played best when he had Rooney alongside him. Wayne certainly seemed to bring out the best in Berbatov and they combine so well that I believe they should be our first choice partnership. Not a coincidence that Rooney is the common link for our best striking partnerships however though BUT, we haven't seen much of Hernandez and Berbatov together but they did quite well against Blackpool.
Both had a decent season, Berba's best but still would choose Rooney as a Rooney out of form but still on the pitch is better than an out of form Berba.
Easily Berbatov. One who has eyes can know this. One who is blind due to bitterness will forever not see the truth. Rooney out of form can't score a goal from open play in 9 months and Rooney out of form can't trap a ball. I don't see how this could be any better than Berbatov. Rooney out of form is no better than Heskey.
Well to be honest i think united got very lucky. while rooney was off form berbatov stood up and was counted with some stunning displays and alot of goals. and when berbatov when a little off form and lost his place to hernendez, rooney done the exact same thing, he got back up from his slump and really started to show his stuff, and started putting him some really good displays. So its a hard pick to say which was better, but id say berbatov just edges it by the fact he was better for longer.
How is that luck? It just shows that we have a great squad with players willing to step up to the plate when one goes off form/is injured.
This It makes me laugh all the people saying "why buy Young when you have Nani and Valencia?" Simple - Nani and Valencia will not both play at top form and full fitness for the whole of next season. By bringing in Young, we make sure we are not reliant on them doing so. Likewise with Phil Jones next season if Rio, Vidic or Smalling get injured or have poor form. Even in CM, we may not have any stand out performers but what we do have are four players who all play at a relatively similar level imo. So if one of them is injured or loses form we don't suddenly go off a cliff like Chelsea did when Drogba and Lampard were injured or unfit last year. And people wonder why we manage to win the PL so easily when our first 11 is no better than that of the other top clubs...
