Hi folks.

Ive had a search through recent threads and couldn't find the answer so I'm really sorry if this has already been covered.

If Utd win the FA cup and Liverpool win the Europa league, therefore qualifying for champs league. Am I right in thinking 8th will be good enough for Europa league?

Assuming current league positions stay the same:

Fa cup winners - united
C1 cup winners - city (champs league through finishing 4th)
5th and 6th - united (already qualified through fa cup) and West ham
7th Liverpool - champs league
8th us - 3rd Europa spot?

I researched the answer to this recently, given that I too had assumed that it would lead to 8th getting into the EL. Alas not. The limit is seven sides in Europe. So five in the CL and two in the EL.

Rather than going to 8th, that spare EL goes to something like the cup winner of the highest ranked European country whose cup winner doesn't already qualify for Europe. So Liverpool winning the EL is of benefit to us, but could be beneficial to some Latvian side (random example which may or may not be right).

"Oh boo. I decided to look into it further, to see if my logic was misplaced or not. And it is:

"If that club has already qualified for the UEFA Champions League via their domestic league, then the association remains with four places in the UEFA Champions League. If that club has already qualified for the UEFA Europa League via their domestic league, it results in five clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League, and two – not three – participating in the UEFA Europa League."

So Liverpool progressing isn't as useful as I thought. Still though, some use to us. Winning the EL is surely much more likely for them than finishing 4th, so they may well decide to go all out for the EL and not always put out full strength sides in the PL. Indeed, just look at their team against Stoke last time. A couple of kids making their first PL starts."

We're actually 7th at the moment.
 
I wonder if it boils down to the interpretation of the wording "If that club has already qualified for the UEFA Europa League via their domestic league". If, for example, West Ham finish 5th, Utd finish 6th and win the FA Cup, and Liverpool finish 7th, then it could be said that Liverpool qualify for the EL by virtue of taking City's League Cup EL spot - ie an indirect result of Liverpool's domestic league finish, rather than a direct result. So Liverpool getting that spot up in exchange for a CL spot (by winning the EL) could then mean that three spots are retained.

(As an aside, if that Sky article is indeed correct, then it's saying that Leicester will be seeded in the CL group stage)

Unfortunately when not giving me insider transfer knowledge, that goddam parrot is useless!

So are we approaching concluding that we need Utd to win the FA Cup, Liverpool specifically to NOT win the Europa League, and for us to finish above Liverpool?

I've just concluded that if we win our last two games, then we've done our bit and the rest will just be what it is :)

Yes, this is right and the Sky article is wrong. I think for this purpose "domestic league" also includes cups, ie all national competitions. Liverpool winning doesn't matter to us, Man Utd winning pushes the places down to 7th.

Obviously most Saints fans don't spend all that long on the UEFA website, so there will be an amazing amount of Chinese whispers in the stadium if we need a result v Crystal Palace (or people think we do).

Ah, ok. Slightly annoying, but we've still got a good chance. A very good one if we overturn Spurs.

It used to be like that, but UEFA Exec Committee changed it in Brendy's article above.
 
The sky article makes it pretty clear that if Liverpool win the EL and finish in a EL qualification spot, that this spot will NOT go to another team. Where has the confusion come from?
